Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday and that can mean eating a very rich meal and washing it down with copious amounts of alcohol. I am reminded this holiday is highlighted by eating a King Cake, but not to fear because I have found two bakeries that make and ship gluten-free King cakes.
A King Cake is a cinnamon-roll type cake that is traditionally covered with Mardi Gras themed icing. A King cake usually comes with beads and there is also a baby that is either inside or underneath the cake. If you are the person who gets the baby in their piece, it is said that you will have good luck for the remainder of the year.
When I wrote this article last year, Magnolia Manor Sweets, a local bakery, was making gluten-free King cakes, but they are not able to make them this year. Fear not, because here are the two bakeries that make and ship them across the United States:
- Rheinlander Bakery - has a 12" ring cake complete with baby and beads that comes filled with either cream cheese or cinnamon filling. This bakery donates 10% of all King cake sales to a worthy case and this year that is the Red Cross' National Disaster Relief Fund. They have been doing this donation since 2005 and Hurricane Katrina.
- The Peace Bakery - is new to the gluten-free King cake scene and they are a dedicated gluten-free bakery located in Metairie, LA. Their King cake is vegan (no dairy or eggs), soy free, and yeast free too.
Enjoy Fat-Tuesday and top it off with a gluten-free King cake.
