This knowledge will make sitting at the gaming table all that more enjoyable, since you will be able to socialize and maybe even impress some of your fellow game players.

Although the original puritan founders of America thought gambling was a sin, the Native American culture and the melting pot of European settlers made gambling in the United States more acceptable. In 1931, Nevada was the first state to legalize gambling. Since then, Las Vegas (population 568,000), has become the gambling capital of the world with nearly 40 million people visiting the city each year. There are currently about 75 casinos in Las Vegas but you do not have to visit one to enjoy the pastime. Over 1,700 businesses in Vegas are licensed to offer gambling.

Of all the visitors, only about 5% admit that gambling is the main attraction, however, 88% of people who visit end up gambling at some point in their holiday. Las Vegas can also be considered the number one wedding destination in the world with 320 weddings on the average day. It only cost a couple $35 (on average) to tie the knot in the city. The infographic also points out that Las Vegas is home to the largest neon sign in the world. Vegas Vic is the iconic neon cowboy sign that stands on Fremont Street.

Although Las Vegas is the gambling capital in today’s world, gambling itself predates recorded history, which is evidenced by various ancient artifacts. The earliest date where evidence of gambling exists is 2,300 B.C. in China but there is an ongoing debate over whether the first casinos began in Ancient China or the Nile Delta. Keno is the oldest gambling game in existence with written records that date back to the Han Dynasty between 205 and 187 BC. It was introduced by Cheung Leung, according to the records, as a way to raise money for the armies.
