Teixeira (22-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) earned the shot with his first-round TKO of Ryan Bader, at the Sept. 4 UFC Fight Night 28 event in Brazil.
UFC Director of International Development Marshall Zelaznik confirmed the news that Teixeira would receive a crack at the winner of Jones vs Gustafsson during Wednesday's UFC Fight Night 28 post-event news conference.
He cited a conversation with UFC President Dana White, who did not attend the event at Mineirinho Arena in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Teixeira wasn't pleased with his performance, even though he finished Bader in the opening stanza.
"To tell you the truth, I wasn't happy with this fight," Teixeira said immediately after the Bader fight. "I was disappointed he was able to knock me down. … But I'm telling you, this belt is going to be mine. It doesn't matter if it's Jon Jones or Gustafsson. It's mine."
Jones fights Gutierrez later this month in the main event of UFC 165 in Toronto, so the title fight featuring the winner of that bout against Teixeira would likely happen in early-2014.
"If he gets to the point in his career when he wants to move up to heavyweight, I mean, what he accomplished in the first year and a half as a light heavyweight was incredibly impressive," UFC President Dana White said of Jon Jones. "The fact that he can move up – I've been waiting for Anderson Silva to move up to 205, but he never wanted to do it. I'd like to see it."
Jones says Teixeira is on his radar, but he knows he'll have to slip past Gustafsson first.
"He's a guy on my radar, and that's a fight that I want," Jones said.
