Carlton Bickford, 76, of Glover, has been charged with the shooting death of a woman in Barton.
On Friday, at approximately 3:30 p.m., police said that Bickford arrived at the Lyndonville Police Department and told officers that he had shot and killed a woman that day.
Vermont State Police were called in to investigate Bickford's claim.
Upon arriving at the scene of the alleged crime, police officers found Rachel Coburn, 72, of Barton in her home located at 104 West Street in Barton.
According to police, Bickford said that he and Coburn had gotten into an argument earlier that day.
After leaving Coburn's home, Bickford came back armed with a shotgun.
Another argument ensued, at which point, police said, Bickford shot and killed Coburn.
"Bickford then attempted to take his own life with the shotgun," the police report said, "which resulted in a grazing injury to his shoulder."
Bickford was able to drive himself to the Lyndonville Police Department to report the crime.
Bickford is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow at 1 p.m. for first degree murder. He is currently lodged at the Northeast Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury.
