We recently got a chance to catch up with Singer/Songwriter, Musician and Producer, "KP" to talk his success, new clothing line, working with star KeKe Palmer, his music and more... Check out my one-on-one exclusive with the rising star below:
RW: Who is KP?
KP: KP is a positive energy and force. I mean, that's all I could really say...I'm just a positive force, doing what God put me on Earth to do -- Spreading music. I consider myself a utensil for the Kingdom of God.
RW: Are you from Fresno, CA?
KP: No, actually I was born and raised in San Jose, CA but spent all of the crucial years of my life here in Fresno...So I would consider myself a Fresno native for sure.
RW: You're a Singer/Songwriter...What else do you do?
KP: I sing, write songs, produce, play the piano and drums.
RW: Drums? Wow.
KP: Yeah, I've been playing drums since I was 2 years old. I've actually toured as both a singer and drummer.
RW: At what point did you discover your talent?
KP: My Dad was signed to Motown, Mom sung a bit... Grew up surrounded by music.
RW: I follow you on Facebook and notice how positive you are. I feel we need a lot more of that - You never know who's life you can change or who you could effect through your post. I would like to thank you for being that "positive force" -- What inspires your positivity?
KP: I come from a positive background, but it's about breaking the barrier or the walls down from what people are use to seeing. There's a lot of negativity going around and don't get me wrong, I have bad days but the way I see it, you NEVER let anyone see you sweat. I mean nobody because it's a weakness and someone could use that against you. No matter what, I'm a keep a positive outlook because you never know who's life you could affect. One post... It could be someone out there ready to give up and they see one, just one post thing you post and it change their whole mindset. That's my outlook on life man, when people see me -- I don't want anyone to have anything bad to say about me. I want people to be like, man... That dude KP, he's full of life, energy and positively.
RW: Have you ever doubted yourself or your career?
KP: It's been times where I wanted to give up, but my Mom, my good friends and family...They were like, "This is what your suppose to do, this is your calling...Don't let it go to waste. You could change peoples lives" But there has been times when I was like; I'm over it, I'm done with it. It just depends on who you surround yourself around -- You surround yourself with positively, positive things will happen for you. Also, if you keep your circle small with people who are close to, who really care, they'll push you and make sure you fulfill your destiny and purpose.
RW: Your sound. How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard music?
KP: My sound is feel good music. I get my inspiration from all kinds of different things... It's just good music, ear candy, something like 90's music -- REAL MUSIC, really pop-py, top 40's -- Feel good.
RW: Who are a few of your musical influences?
KP: Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, Michael Jackson of course... Prince and Jay Z. That's just to name a few!
RW: Who are some artist you would like to work with?
KP: I would love to work with Jay Z, T.I., Fabolous, Bruno Mars and Drake.
RW: What is your current single?
KP: My current single is "Do Me Like That"
RW: Can you tell us a little more about the track, what inspired it?
KP: The song, "Do Me Like That" was produced by So Incredible (he's produced a lot of big records). It's about...Well, you got your female, your chick and your just telling her don't do me like that...I want to know that you'll never leave, that you'll always be here. It's one of those type of records... Young, fun - A feel good type of record.
RW: I heard you recently signed a deal, Congrats! Can you tell us a little more about that?
KP: I signed a publishing deal a year and a half ago with New Heights Entertainment (most of their songs are on Billboard and are responsible for artist like Lady Gaga, The Jonas Brothers and Toni Braxton- to name a few). Right now, they are really putting the time and energy in to me so that's a blessing!
RW: Are you currently working on any projects?
KP: I did two joints with Keke Palmer... Worked with Brody Brown, who's won two Grammy's, but was nominated for 9. I got those two joints, one features T.I. It's called "Last Time" and also I'm working on my own project. I got a big world tour on the way with Will.I.Am, Nas ... And a lot of other names - It's all in the wood works. I'm on a everyday grind, trying to capitalize on every move I make.
RW: How does it feel to watch your dreams come true?
KP: It's humbling honestly. You appreciate the hard work you've put in when you see the success and see the way people react to your music. It's a very humbling experience.
RW: Other than your music, is there anything else you're working on?
KP: Well, I'm starting my own movement. I have my own clothing line -- "Global Empire," and currently working with my own and first artist, Karlo Rossi... I just produced his first single and wrote the hook as well. Right now, I'm just trying to build my own brand and trying to brand myself. Everything is about branding!
RW: Where can your fans find your music?
KP: Right now, my whole mixtape 'Fly Meets Swagg Vol. 1' is available for free download on Reverbnation -- I want to give it away. In order to get fans, I feel you have to give them something and initially Drake was the best one who did it. When he dropped his first mixtape, it was available for free download. Once he blew up, the label packaged it, re-released it and the fans bought it because it was good music. If it's good music and fans believe in it, whether it's for free or not... They are going to go pay!
RW: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in pursuing a career in Music?
KP: Don't give up! You gotta give more, grind harder than the next person...That's my motto. Just do you! Don't let everything consume you. Just focus and it's really just about focus. Just stay focused and keep pushing and it will happen. Just put in the hours to perfect your craft...That's the biggest part-- Perfecting your craft and studying the music or whatever it is you are interested in pursuing.
