Global Marijuana March smokes out Cannabis Support in Madison

At the Capitol before the march

MADISON: Saturday's Global Cannabis March - Madison found great support as it snaked through downtown Madison from the N. Hamilton entrance of the State Capitol all the way to the Mifflin St. Block Party. March organizer Ben Masel, from the Madison chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), estimated that by the time the GCM - Madison reached the Mifflin Block Party that at least 250 were marching. The march grew quickly, attracting supporters from the Capitol Square Farmer's Market as it departed the Square. Heading down State St. marchers received cheers, applause and other displays of support from people at sidewalk cafes or passing by.

Saturday's Global Cannabis March - Madison was one of more than 320 pro-cannabis marches scheduled for May 1 or May 8 around the world, from locales as distant as Nimbin Australia to cities across North America, Europe and other parts of the world. Cannabis/Ibogaine activist Dana Beal coordinates the marches through Cures Not Wars, his New York-based reform group.

The March heads down State St.

With thousands and thousands of people in downtown Madison for the Farmer's Market, a large immigration rally and march, and the Mifflin St. Block Party, the march, combined with mild temperatures and sunny skies was very visible. Enthusiastic support from people out and about and honks from passing motorists demonstrated that Cannabis Prohibition continues to have little support or respect in Wisconsin's Capital City.

The reception on Mifflin St. where probably more than 10,000 were already gathered for the annual party/beer bash, was as enthusiastic and high volume as in prior years. Partygoers high-fived passing marchers and cheered loudly from lawns and balconies. Police patrolling the event were welcoming too, as the march made its way through dense crowds of Mifflin partiers.

Big welcome on Mifflin!

The Global Cannabis March - Madison 2010 was a success and Madison NORML is already planning to do it again in 2011.

Alcohol is regulated, controlled and taxed. Why not marijuana?

Why don't they legalize coca tea, and leaves? It could alter the very American speed culture to less harmful herbal form, rather than have all these toxic chemicals produced so some Wall Streeters can snort away.
