Glitch in the system: Starbound’s machine race revealed

By now, most gamers following Starbound are starting to see a pattern. Oppressive intellectuals, flightless birds, carnivorous plant people, so far Chucklefish has taken a very interesting approach to species design by essentially taking the first thing that comes to mind and turn it completely inside out. And now this strange roster is joined by the Glitch, a machine race that has appeared in screenshots before but was left unnamed until recently. So how does one invert the themes surrounding a race of presumably hyper-advanced machines? Apparently by making them technophobic.

The Glitch began life as part of a grand sociological simulation created by some unknown hyper-intelligence. In the case of the Glitch, an error in their programming caused them to be permanently stuck in a society and level of technology similar to the early Middle Ages. Subsequently their dress and architecture is reminiscent of feudal Europe, with several screenshots depicting a single massive castle filled with android knights and nobility on a desert planet.

As you can see, Chucklefish seems to have an interesting approach to species design. One has to wonder what they have planned for the Hylotl, the last of the six aliens races available at launch, and what they’ll do for any released post-launch.
