On February 14, 2013, Gli Unici (Italian for “The Only Ones”) repeated their Valentine's Day special concert at the Magik Theater in downtown San Antonio. The handsome tenors (Donald Braswell II, Timothy Birt and William Chapman) delivered. Opera masterpieces, Broadway hits and everything from Il Divo to pop standards.
The Magik Theater was developed to provide theater for youth and weaves magical stories for children. The facility is also available for other functions and this night was leased by Orpheus Entertainment Group, L.L.C. to hold the tenor concert.
The Magik Theater staff were stellar professionals, from box office to lighting to sound. It was a beautiful concert. The singers were bathed in changing colored lights throughout. The hands-free wireless mics were a special treat. It proved to be an excellent concert venue.
Each divo graced the stage for two solos interspersed with other powerfully harmonized selections. Braswell was stunning with his version of “Music of the Night” and “Papa”. Birt was brilliant with “Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!” and “Bring Him Home”. Chapman bought tears with “You'll Never Walk Alone” and “Nessun Dorma” always brings the house down, especially as the other two join him for the last stanza.
Together the booming voices are spectacular. A special moment was during “Sway” Chapman went into the audience and danced with his young daughter. In that number Braswell always gets cat calls for his wonderful dance moves.
At the end of the show, the audience demanded an encore, so the trio gave them “O sole mio” a cappella, earning them another standing ovation. All in all, a truly "Magikal"night.
The turn out was light for the little publicized concert. Those who didn't go, missed a fabulous show. Those who did go were thrilled to get the personal attention both during the show and afterwards at the meet-and greet. A number of Braswellians (Donald Braswell Fan Club members) turned out making the evening one also of catching up with old and new friends.
