Criticism of the Washington Redskins' team name is nothing new. Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune wrote over twenty years ago that the Reskins "are the only big time professional sports team whose name is an unequivocal racial slur. After all, how would we react if the team was named the Washington Negroes? Or the Washington Jews? ... It is more than just a racial reference, it is a racial epithet."
But despite this criticism of the team having sustained for decades, Glenn Beck has apparently decided, not only that the criticism is brand new, but that it is actually being brought up as a conspiracy to punish the team for its campaign contributions.
According to Beck and co-host Stu Burguiere, 97% of the donations made by affiliates of the Washington Redskins went to the G.O.P. It is therefore their conclusion that the criticism of the team's name, which has persisted for decades, is actually meant to punish their donors for contributing to Republicans.
"Oh my gosh!" Beck declared. "Follow the money!"
"I will bet you that is to send a message," he continued, after which he charged that the Redskins are being tortured and having their right to free speech violated by vindictive political operatives.
In addition to not understanding that it isn't a free speech violation when someone expresses a negative opinion of you, Beck fails to take into account that this is the kind of criticism the team has been enduring since the Ronald Reagan was President.
Glenn Beck will hate hearing this, but it's the truth: Not everything is proof of a liberal conspiracy.
