Glenn Beck is a political media superstar, and tomorrow he tries to transcend to "founding father of the civil rights movement," with his highly-publicized and highly symbolic "Restoring Honor 8-28-2010" rally today, in front of the Lincoln Memorial Washington D.C.
Today, on August 28th, 2010, 47-years to-the-day, since Martin Luther-King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream," Glenn Beck intends to transcend from mere stardom, to a coveted place in American History as a "civil rights" leader only he will be leading the movement stuck in reverse. Glenn Beck wants to take America "back" and "restore" its "honor," because a progressive America is a "bad" America. In Glenn Beck's view, progressives are shoving America down a slippery slope to socialism and even communism. Glenn Beck wants to take America back from "them," or "us" because "they" or "we," are evil instruments of Satan.
Glenn Beck and his Tea Party followers are afraid, and today's rally will certainly be used to stoke that fear. Glenn Beck has made many millions of dollars tapping into the fear of low-income and retired conservative Americans with his ultra-conservative, apocalyptic, theocratic, conspiracy theorist and McCarthyism views on America, U.S. politics, U.S. policy, the liberal media, liberals and progressives in general, progressive viewpoints, non-whites, religion, Christianity, non-Christians, social and world issues, as well as the U.S. Constitution. Today will be used to attempt to solidify his media-market-share into real political power and stoke his ego and brand name. But is it a gamble or a slam-dunk?
Glenn Beck's ace-in-the-hole is his ability to connect with his follower's fear, and he does so by re-writing scripture, denouncing other accepted theological belief structures, and his daily attempts to rewrite American history.
Glenn Beck, on his nationally syndicated radio program, May 26th, 2010: "We are on the right side of history! We are on the side of individual freedoms and liberties and, dammit, we will reclaim the civil rights moment. We will take that movement -- because we were the people who did it in the first place."
Apparently in Glenn Beck's mind, because the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed at a time when whites were supremely in charge of this nation, somehow, that makes the civil rights movement a white movement.
Today's rally will be interesting, because it will be just another check on the pulse of our nation. If Glenn Beck succeeds in bringing even a third of his 3 million viewers to the Mall in Washington today, he will have demonstrated how far back a substantial minority of the citizens of this nation are willing to slide in the name of fear. With the entire conservative media machine behind him, anything less will demonstrate that Glenn Beck and his conservative cohorts are all big-money hype, with little clue on the real direction of this nation.
