Glenn Beck's CPAC speech features his signature attacks on progressivism

Insert photo caption or credit here

Today Glenn Beck delivered his much anticipate keynote speech at the CPAC convention.  As expected Beck fed the hungry crowd some red meat by attacking progressives and preaching the virtues of free market conservatism.

The Beck began a little rough for Beck as he stumbled to a few times and struggled to come up with the phrase "political spectrum" requiring some help from the crowd.  Like other conservatives at the conference he criticized President Obama's use of a teleprompter while simultaneously consulting his own notes in a binder.

However a few minutes into the speech Beck had found his groove.  The theme of the speech came out early when Beck stated "Progressivism is the cancer and it is tearing our Constitution."  Beck essentially equated progressives with communists arguing the only difference is that they seek to change the system through "evolution" instead of "revolution."

To support his proposition Beck cited Van Jones the former green jobs adviser from the Obama administration.  Beck made a name for himself for his role in Van Jones resignation.  Beck argued that Van Jones is a communist even though Van Jones has explicitly disavowed any connection to communism and now embraces free market solutions.

It was then that Beck used the recent statement from Tiger Woods to attack progressives.  This was by far the strangest portion of the speech as Beck attempted to make remote connections to Tiger Woods story and the political world today.  Beck read large portions from Woods' statement.  At one point he argued we all would be "making it with a lot of unbelievable babes" if not for bad consequences.  Beck seemed to suggest it was not the actual infidelity that was wrong but rather the consequences that come from it.  Beck then attempted to equate Tiger Woods actions with progressive policies.

The stronger portion of the speech was when Beck turned to trying to define conservatism.  Beck argued that conservatism means personal responsibility even that ultimately leads to letting people fail.  Beck never prescribes specifically what this means but one could assume Beck would be in favor of getting rid of economic safety nets like welfare, unemployment, and maybe even Medicaid and Medicare.  Following along the line of Ron Paul, who won the straw poll at CPAC, Beck argued the only legitimate role of government is to protect us from the "bad guys."

Of course Beck had sprinkled in many of use his one-liners through the speech as well.  He said American needs "less Marx and more Madison" which gained a large applause.  After arguing children should not get a trophy just for participating Beck took a shot at President Obama saying "What is this the Nobel Peace Prize?"

Finally after warning his audience of a coming "economic holocaust" Beck argued that Americans will eventually recover after returning to conservative principles.  In essence Beck stated that American is currently in a "hangover" stage and still in need of "four hours of vomiting" before we can begin to recover.

In all it was a classic Beck speech with all the chalkboard and all.  It all featured Beck's signature sweating causing him to frequently use a towel to dry off.  If you were a fan of Beck before the speech you were sure to be a fan after as he delivered a signature performance full of the same themes and emotion.  If one disliked Beck because of his rhetoric, apparent distortions of fact, and overall style then tonight's speech likely reinforced that attitude.

You neglected to mention the lesson he taught about the depression of 1920 which was quickly corrected by Calvin Coolidge and followed by years of prosperity because of the policies of low taxes and low spending.
Everyone should listen to what Beck said. It was quite a history lesson. One thing about history, it actually can still be fact checked.
The last thing progressives want you to do is listen to Glenn Beck.
We've been educated about what progressivism is & you progressives will now disapear from political leadership into that good night and good ridance!

Glenn has it right, he is addressing the root of the problem at hand.

It appears that the writer of this "review" Ryan Witt is a super-liberal Beck bashing idiot, if he actually thinks the communist Van Jones has converted to embrace free market capitalist principles. Get a real job loser.

What would your emotions be, if you were the keynote speaker at a very large gathering where other highly respected speakers had been? If your answer is nervous, then you are bound to make some oratorical mistakes and be a wee bit sweaty too.

Regarding Jones, the eastbayexpress.com's article on Jones states that he joined a group that studied marx and lenin in an attempt to bring about a socialist utopia.

His statement from Woods was to demonstrate how the Republican party is to approach its issue: first admit you were wrong and be sincere about doing what is right just one day at a time.

If you came to the conclusion that the constitution shows the government how to do more than protect us from "the bad guys", then please write an article about it.

Please write a convincing article demonstrating that Beck is a fact distorter.

Beck used the Collosus of Rhodes and the Statue of Liberty to demonstrate how America is great. Please write about this; it's important for your

I just watched the video of Beck's address. I find myself honestly wondering how anyone could have been in the room and written this article. That is, unless the writer is a leftist, liberal, progressive idealist who has a deep hatred for any idea which proves his ideologies are harmful to the people of any nation which follows them.

Or, maybe the writer spent a lot of time at the bar. That could explain it.

If you have to search to find anything wrong with that speech or what Beck stands for go find another place to live... pahleese. We don't need you. We are broke because of entitlements. Both parties have piled it on for political gain. Its time to sober up and fix the problem. Obama and Harry Pelosi are not the answer.

Beck has educated himself and most of the "listening" U.S. by reading and talking with many experts. He actually asks the right questions and gets the answers. He shows proof of his findings. Unlike the far right and left and our biased MEDIA. If you watch and listen to him and his experts you can't find anything more American then his position. We don't owe anyone anything but own hard work and SWEAT for the American Dream. If I have to move to a Libertarian Party to get that dream...then so be it.

The progresives have not given up on conquering the United States. Their greed for power is channeled through the policy of the greater good. 95% of the world's governments obtained their power base upon that premise, including Iran and Cuba. The progressives know that the United States Constitution is the only thing that stands in the way of one world government. The U. S. Constitution and progressive dogma cannot co-exist. Rule of law versus rule of men. Something's gotta give.

Ryan "Nit" Witt... Did Keith Blowberman write your article? The jig is up! The American Individual is coming after the progressive / liberal / leftist at all levels; local, county, state, and federal. Time to join the party of get a real job and contribute to society in a constructive rather than destructive way. The cruise ship to Europe's utopia awaits you and your ill thinking con-rads. I suggest you review Glenn's keynote address a minimum of 10 times before you... On a second thought, don't waste your time. You are a 20 percenter and will always be a 20 percenter.

Beck did not actually say "Peace" prize in his speech. What he said was plainly Nobel Prize. You added in Peace here.

    Ryan,

This sentence fragment: "but one could assume Beck would be in favor of getting rid of economic safety nets like welfare, unemployment, and maybe even Medicaid and Medicare. "

I don't agree. Just pointing that out. Also you have no facts to make that statement. I have noticed in your writing that you play on the emotional heart strings as much other journalist accuse Beck of doing.

The fact that you just assume that people are going to agree with you in that statement is sloppy logic at best and misleading in other ways.

  • Scott Ponds 2 years ago

Please don't try to re-write history. Van Jones SAID he was a communist. His words not Becks. So what, he disavowed the words from his own mouth. Like Tiger Woods he came to Jesus when CAUGHT.

Progressives should be weeded out and are a cancer.

Davey: Beck said the only role of federal government is to protect us from "bad guys." He has said before he is a libertarian. He believes the government federal role should be strictly limited to the powers prescribed by the Constitution. Please tell me where in the Constitution it explicitly states the federal government can provide Medicare, Medicaid, and unemployment. Beck has mentioned on NUMEROUS occasions his opposition to entitlement programs. The fact that you are unwilling to look this up shows that you are lazy at best and disingenuous at worst.

  • Stuart 2 years ago

Beck has so much common sense. He is so refreshing to listen to.

Davey: Oh and and I did not "assume that people agreed with me on that statement." I made the statement. If you want to disagree fine make your case. However you should not ASSUME that I am assuming anything in the statement other than what it actually says. Are you a mind reader Dave? Why don't you prove me wrong instead of attacking me personally. Please show me a quote in which Beck supports economic safety nets like Medicare and unemployment.

Progressives are the cancer of this country. They have put this country to shame. Let's weed these retards out.

  • davey.anonymous@gmail.com 2 years ago

    Hi Ryan,

Actually I think this could be covered under the 10th amendment. The one that gives any power not laid out in the Constitution to the states. Maybe not. But if you want to look at it strictly, yeah, its not the government's job.

Now, we do have a system in the Constitution in place to change that. If it really important enough for country then we should amended the Constitution to include those powers.

  • davey.anonymous@gmail.com 2 years ago

*amend* not amended - sorry about that.

Why is he your enemy. I think he is a guy with an opinion. It is when people get silly like this that everything goes to hell.

One nice thing about Reagan was that he didn't personally attack political opponents, he attacked the issues. There is a difference, something I think we all have forgotten.

This article also seems to bypass a key point of the address which was to hold Republican just as accountable as Dems and anyone else who is progressive. But I guess those types of points cut against the overly simplistic view of Beck that the Left likes to hold to, that he is just an anti-Obama mouthpiece of the GOP.

    From Wikipedia

In 1977, William Beck filed for divorce against Mary due to her increasing alcoholism.[8] Glenn and his older sister moved with their mother to Sumner, Washington, attending a Jesuit school[9] in Puyallup. On May 15, 1979, his mother drowned in Puget Sound, just west of Tacoma, Washington.[9] A man who had taken her out in a small boat also drowned. A Tacoma police report stated that Mary Beck "appeared to be a classic drowning victim", but a Coast Guard investigator speculated that she could have intentionally jumped overboard.[9] Beck has described his mother's death as a suicide in interviews during television and radio broadcasts.[9][8]

After their mother's death, Beck and his older sister moved to their father's home in Bellingham, Washington,[7] where Beck graduated from Sehome High School in June 1982.[10] In the aftermath of his mother's death and subsequent suicide of his stepbrother, Beck has said he used "Dr. Jack Daniel's" to cope.[11]
