Glenn Beck refuses to define 'white culture' in Katie Couric interview (Video)

Glenn Becks discusses white culture and Obama with Katie Couric

  culture" comments (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

Earlier this week, Glenn Beck helped Katie Couric kick off her new web series @KatieCouric, which features candid interviews with political, business, and entertainment newsmakers.

In the interview, Glenn Beck was asked to clarify his July 28th statements in which he called President Obama a "racist" and claimed Obama had a "deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."  When pressed by Couric to define "white culture," Beck refused to answer.

"Go to GlennBeck.com, listen to it, you can hear all of it," Beck responded.

When Couric brought up the question again, suggesting that Beck should be able to back up his statements, the popular Fox News host said, "I don't know how to answer that that's not a trap."

What do you think of Beck's answers?  Was Couric trying to trap the controversial host?  Was Beck attempting to hide his true feelings for Obama?  Or, was Beck at a loss for words because even he doesn't believe some of the things that comes out of his mouth?  Sound off in the poll and comments section below.

Be sure to watch the videos below to see how Glenn Beck responds to
Katie Couric's probing questions.

"The minority assimilated into the dominant culture, not the other way around. Only white culture could be neutral and objective. Only white culture could be nonracial, willing to adopt the occasional exotic into its ranks. Only white culture had individuals." ~ Barack Obama, Dreams of My Father (Ch. 5, left out of the audio book)

cooler: Sound charitable to the "White Culture" to me. Sounds like he is given that culture some credit for being flexible and malleable.

I can only listen to Beck for about 1 min. That was true when he was with Headline News and its still true with Fox News. You have to be uninformed to even stomach the vast majority of what he says. Beck and the spin doctors at FNN are a cancer that is eating away at the most vulnerable segment of our society; the mostly white, ignorant, and troubled.

Despite Glenn Beck's success, thankfully, this segment is shrinking. Unfortunately, the Republicans and Congress still think it rules their party. The good thing about Beck is that he exposes them for all to see between elections.

As he drives more and more for the Republican ranks, it's only a matter of time before the rank and file make the connection that Beck and those like him are the cause of the Democrat's super majority and the presidency.

Wow , you guys should do some actual reading, or watch some of Obamas speechs, you sound like uneducated products of the public school system. Do you REALLY believe that Obama went to Rev Writes church for 20 years and didnt know he was preaching hate speech? So, why did he sit in the pews for 20 years if he didnt agree? Lies? Really, so all of the Van Jones video out there where he says "Whites are pumping poison into the citys to kill people of color" were made up by Beck? Do you think Obama didnt know that Van Jones felt that way when he hired him? Obama said he had been watching Van Jones for years, he never Googled him? Whats that say of Obamas beliefs? So, asking questions like "If the health care reform bill wont go into effect until 2013, WHY do you want to shove it down our throats before congress can read it, or debate it??is racist to you, you need to look up the definition. Also, look up "Socialism" and tell me how much your going to love living where EVERYONE has nothing!

Hey DougH, the stupidist thing I've ever read! You say you cant watch Beck for more then 1 minute, so, what your saying is you refuse to listen to any opposing view points, sound like a smart man!! Been to the DMV? Been on unemployment? If so, you would know that the Gov cant run ANYTHING right!! I'm from Detroit, and once Canada went socialized health care, we got a lot of new doctors and nurses in MI, as they went to school for 10 years average for a doctor, and had no desire to work as a Gov employee making squat!! Then some smart capitolists in MI bought buses, and now run them up to Canada to bring patients to MI so they can see a doctor before they die waiting in Canada! Talking about this is racist? Detroit mayor Colman Young raped the city of millions, and when someone asked where the money went, he yelled "Racism".he store millions and that was in the 70's, yelling "Bigot" when you have no real intelligent argument is old school for people who want something without working!

    Mr Beck
Everyday on your show you demand people take responsibility for their actions and words. Here it seems you are no better than the people you criticize.

Everyday on your show you say you will not be afraid to stand up and tell the truth. So why so afraid to answer Ms Couric's question. Maybe you Mr Beck need to take a break and realize you are becoming what you proclaim you hate.

  • Wondering? 2 years ago

Smart man that Glenn. He knows that all he has to do is spew a bunch of hatred nonsense, and some uneducated/uninformed poor sap, will take the ball and run with it. Glenn is laughing his rich behind all the way to the bank! I can’t blame him though; he just puts that nonsense out there. There are enough upset folks out there ready to embrace his type of rhetoric, as because they are looking for someone to hate and blame!

  • bartonizer 2 years ago

I think Glenn Beck should be the litmus test for human intelligence. If you believe what he says, you fail. He whips up anger in the jaded and uninformed. He is a dry drunk circus clown, and he's taken waaaay too many of you for a ride. For kicks, Google "How GQ made Glenn Beck Cry". It'll show you how much effort Beck puts into getting teary-eyed to stir you dingbats into a frenzy of ignorance.

Oh, and a point of contention with Dick: We do have some of the best doctors in the world. The difference between American citizens going to American doctors and Canadian citizens going to American doctors is that the Canadians are covered and reimbursed under their national health care plan. Canadian citizens, rich or poor, are at least guaranteed to get treatment if something happens. Are you?

  • dianabug 2 years ago

It really doesn't matter what anyone says here in these comments - those of us who believe Glenn Beck is on to something, will continue to watch and learn and put pressure on the elected officials and those who don't believe what Glenn has to say will continue to spew and blather on comment spaces like this one.

  • bartonizer 2 years ago

Dianabug, I'm not saying that some of the things he rants about aren't interesting, but so are the secret symbols on the one dollar bill. You saying that it doesn't matter what anyone else says proves that you don't care to listen to anyone else, and unfortunately that passes for discourse on both sides of the aisle these days. After all, simply sticking your fingers in your ears and saying "I don't hear you" is rather childish. If Beck is where you get your information, and you don't take it with a huge grain of salt, I would view you on the same credibility level as people that get their news from the National Inquirer, people that regularly call the psychic hotline, and those that still believe that we didn't land on the moon.

Glenn Beck is full of crap. He's just a racist playing the victim, how can he claim to know what Barack had to endure growing up in society, if Beck himself doesn't know what it's like to be judged by the color of his skin, or never having delt with racism at a personal level.

  • KC 2 years ago

It cracks me up when people say Glenn Beck is spews lies and hate but never give examples or counter arguments. So who are the ones lying and spreading hate? They call him uneducated as if that were a put down. In my opinion, formal education is the leading cause of stupidity in the country today.

  • KC 2 years ago

    Hey Mr. Rocket Scientist,

Are you concluding that white people should have no opinion on racism?

I really thought that when Obama was elected, it would be the end of this racial divide in our country. Little did I know that Obama would open the door to all of the social justice type organizations who's existence depend on framing the "white culture" as the oppressor of people of color. By standing by and letting these groups stir the pot, he is encouraging the segregation of America by race. I can only conclude this is what he wants since he, the President of the United States, has not acted to intervene.

Then, when someone like Beck has had enough of this crap, he speaks out and his words are immediately dissected and analysed by the left to paint him as the racist.

Racism is a modern day witch hunt. It's a tool used against white people to shut them up.

  • reg 2 years ago

Beck knows exactly what he's saying and why he's saying it. Does he believe it, of course he does and so do his listeners. 60 million people didn't vote for the president "lets face it" mostly white. He knows this is what they want to hear, its a way of getting revenge for loosing the election(sour grapes). Liberals did the same thing to George(minus the hint of violence).

  • kerb 2 years ago

Libs simply call names when they are exposed. Of course Katie wouldn't slant her questions or use soundbites--ask Sarah. Libs have nothing to offset the huge amount of information Beck has accumulated against this corrupt administration--EXPOSED--

  • Sloanranger 2 years ago

Definition of white culture? Something with which Barack Obama chose not to associate. His preference was his black heritage. That was his choice and millions of white people voted for him.
We hoped that by electing a black president that would be the end of racism but no, it has had the opposite effect. Bill Clinton divided this country right down the middle with his pitting of the haves against the have not or vice versus. This president has continued that sadly. We'll know better next time we vote.

bartonizer: You missed my point entirely. We can all run off at the mouth, pro and con in our opinions, and it doesn't amount to a thing. Complete and total waste of time - those who like him will still like him, those who don't still won't. Doesn't matter if you call someone racist or stupid or any other name, we believe what we believe - period.

  • bartonizer 2 years ago

Sorry, I hit refresh and it repeated my post from earlier. Quick point- I think many conservatives believed that the election of a man of color would somehow eliminate our past. While it does signify that our country has taken steps forward, it doesn't mean that racism is over. In fact, many of you knuckleheads are quite racist, but think that you're clever by thinly disguising it. To many repubs, a black president seems to signify the beginning of the end of American culture. This desire to return to "the way things were" is the longing to return to a point in our history when such a thing couldn't have taken place. A time when blacks "knew their role" and there weren't so many dang Mexicans everywhere. You guys are relics of the past, destined to die off or retreat to isolated pockets of Hillbilly Land. Shock jocks like Beck can unify the morons for only so long. Oh, and Kerb, the truth tends to be liberal. That's why you guys create alternate realities (i.e. fox news).

To the Canadian speaking of healthcare...I live near the Canadian border and am an American. I know how much you all pay in taxes to fund the poor healthcare you receive...get ready....50% of all citizens income goes to taxes, plus you pay PST and GST. I guess that's why there is a huge influx of Canadians shopping in the states. They can't afford to pay 20-30% more for the same thing. That being that there is a wash with the exchange at this point. Canadian schools are also poor in comparison to American schools across the border. A canadian just moved in down the street and has been trying for 11 years to come here legally because of the healthcare issue and the schools. Her son is almost a year behind in school here for his age.
So, how does a universal plan sound now Americans? Not so good. Obama needs to start with some of the problems with our healthcare system vs. a complete overhaul. It is a very complicated issue and we should tread lightly before diving headfirst.

I saw Katies news report on Glenn Beck. I've read through the blogs. I truly believe we should not be waisting time asking if Glenn Beck is a Racist. We really need to be asking this question of our president and the people he surrounds himself with. Racism is color blind. Blacks can be racists too. To date the mainstream news has identified anyone (regardless of their actual race) a racist because they do not agree with the health care plan. Shouldn't we all be concerned with these statements. Its a debate not a racial display of arms. The mainstream media and our politician have a professional responsibility to engage the debate without creating a racial divide that is not present in the content of the debate. I cannot believe how weak our leadership is, if they cannot focus on the subject in the face of opposition. When they can't hack it, you become racists (Latinos, Blacks, whites, asians all become white racists).

The only people I've ever heard use the term "white culture" were a group of KKK members that used to hang out in my Grandfathers Barbershop on Sat. mornings.

Honestly, how many of you have ever brought up "white culture" in a conversation or ever heard it used outside of the press describing white supremacy groups?

  • Melanie. 2 years ago

Ray why is the term white culture racist? People refer all of the time to black or hispanic culture and no one calls that racist. People also refer to the black and hispanic communities without everyone acting as though the person just committed a hate crime. "white culture" in the american sense is a blending of the different Europeans cultures. It is synomous with American culture. White people, our laws, heroes, way of life, traditions (before they were destroyed pretty much by the hippie generation)have always been the standard of americanism.
If a black guy were to refer to a white president as racist ,talking about how the white guy had a deep hatred for black culture, how many on the left would be screaming racism rather than nodding their heads in agreement?

  • Daniel Gregory 2 years ago

F*$K racism! -And anyone who sees using the card as an easy way to end an argument, or ruin someone's reputation. It's old, and no longer valid. Be proud of your race, whatever it maybe, so much that criticism rolls off your shoulders. I'm not too familiar with Glenn Beck, but it appeared that he gave honest and earnest answers...even when questions were rephrased and repeated. I think we need a voice of reason in the middle; one of common sense, and not persuaded by "left" or "right". We The People are not being heard. And it is my fear that if uncorrected, may result in a much greater division...and opens possibility for calamity.
United we stand - Divided we fall.

P.S. Many conspiracy theories have arisen lately. It is sad to see the attention that they amass. However, it is more horrific to find that they cannot, or have not been debunked.

    Melanie:

Then tell me, how do white people celebrate "white culture"?

If you were in charge of a "white culture" celebration to be held what would you do? Tell me about the music you would have, the food you would serve and the costumes you would sell at the booths.

    Anyone????

  • Buddy McCue 2 years ago

Why won't he say what he meant? He must know it's offensive.

Besides, the idea of "white culture" is ridiculous. The majority of people in this country are called white. That's too big and diverse a group to have a single, unifying culture. I am a white working-class man living in the South. Culturally, I have more in common with my Black neighbor than I have with a white man from New England.

What the hell kind of question is that? Why are we not given a choice to just say no without the comment added? Katie Couric is a light weight that cannot hold a candle to Glen Beck. This shows how truly biased you are!

  • mattk 2 years ago

He could answer the question, but the libs would spin his answer to put him in a horrid light as usual. He would define white culture more then likely as the culture of the founding fathers. Which would then be turned into him saying slavery is a great thing, etc, etc. Can't blame him for not answering that question, as it leaves out the entire extra information that one hour of his show was focusing on.

Glenn Beck was right - Katie was looking for a sound bite rather than asking why Beck thought Obama was a racist? Look at the survey at the bottom of the video. Choices
Yes, his comments showcase his true beliefs (meaning he's a racist himself?)
No, His comments were solely for ratings (meaning he's a muckraker)

Either answer gives Examiner.com a great survey result. Come-on!

Hey Katie 'white culture' is the same as 'black culture' only it's a lighter shade. Glad you have that anchor job where all you have to do is 'read' the news because you are horrible as an interviewer.

Glen Beck, Ann Coulter, Michael Moore are all political provocateur-entertainers. They purposely push peoples buttons and then stand back, smirk and watch the money pour in. They also know that people hate them or love them. Most people do not seem to see through what they are doing.
People like John Stewart, Mort Sahl, Jay Leno and other political satirists do the same thing but because we defined as comedians we laugh at them. If Glen Beck et al said some of the same things people would become all fired up.
