Cass Sunstein-Information Regulation
Glenn Beck put out a hit the other night on Information and Regulatory czar Cass Sunstein and FCC Diversity czar Mark Lloyd on Twitter . He wants his watch dogs to find everything they can on Cass Sunstein and Mark Lloyd. I never thought that I would be in the running to collect the bounty . Always one to do my research before writing a story I started digging myself on anything Cass Sunstein touched , doing my own vetting , and ran into a lot of theoretical , philosophical , and psychological mumbo jumbo . That's right I said mumbo jumbo , after the Van Jones debacle I can not risk my reputation supporting these fly by night choices for key administrative positions Barack Obama is making over a bottle of beer . Cass Sunstein strikes me , I have come across his type before , as an intellectual middle weight who never grew up masquerading as some type of wiz kid . Part of the problem is he has spread himself too thin and instead of being a wiz kid on a particular subject he is really just a jack of all trades loved by many law school professor . You know what I mean , the type of professor that hangs out with students late at night and may smoke a joint every now and then .
Cass Sunstein writes more than a book a year , either he's smoked too many joints or he has an ego the size of the titanic to keep churning out mediocre books . Just because they sell does not mean there good .Some of this stuff he puts out is total nonsense . Granted , regulating the internet isn't exactly rocket science anyway but I wish Barack Obama would have went in a more conservative direction for this appointment . Between 1990 and 2009 Cass Sunstein published 35 books . That's more than a book a year , His 2001 book, Republic.com, argued that the Internet may weaken democracy because it allows citizens to isolate themselves within groups that share their own views and experiences, and thus cut themselves off from any information that might challenge their beliefs, a phenomenon known as cyberbalkanization. That's totally false if you ask me . Even a skin head lunatic group will surf around the internet to find something to fight about . That's what makes the internet fun , opposing views and interaction .
Conclusion: Barack Obama is treading on dangerous ground with this appointment . He should distance himself from Cass Sunstein to avoid political fall out .This issue will cut across party lines . Somehow Sunstein has mysteriously duped Obama into thinking one little lawyer brain can by himself peel off a string of far out-cool books and attempt to devise a pseudo half baked legal frame work to regulate the world wide web . The world wide web? , which represents as a whole the collective thoughts of billions of minds interacting and communicating in real time over a cyber high way that has no speed limit . Give me an F-EN break .
Did Barack Obama even ask Tim Berners-Lee his opinion on this , are they aware that Cass Sunstein's proposed Fairness Doctrine for the internet is in direct opposition to net neutrality .
Bottom Line: Cass Sunstein is a pre-packaged intellectual , a delusional hyper capitalistic former law professor that never grew up wrapped in a surreal cocoon he created himself with all his quickie books and pseudo intellectual pursuits to handle the emotional baggage from his numerous divorces and the layers will unravel quick if my assumptions are correct , why Obama has decided to go out on a limb and throw him a bone is subject to debate . You could argue that Barack's Valerie Jarrettt led aristocracy views him as just another pawn in their end game or that Barack has a soft spot for old friends . Cass Sunstein has probably half way sold Barack on the remote chance that he can turn this into some type of new economy , it's so raw , far fetched , and rough around the edges that Cass Sunstein might as well be dressed up like a hippie in WoodStock .
Law schools have only been studying ways to regulate and meter the flow of information on the internet a few years , this is a new field , they have tried for a few years now to wrap the world wide web up in some type of regulatory frame work so they can tax and charge some of the big players on the internet . That's what Cass Sunstein is touching on in his book Infotopia but he does not even seem to know where to go with it . In many ways Cass Sunstein is more radical than Van Jones has ever thought of being . Don't get me wrong I believe in large jumps in creativity but Cass is representing small skips as large jumps , that's called a con game . You can wrap the whole con game in Chicago law school and add a dash of Harvard law and sprinkle some best selling books on top if you want but this is what they call a weak hustle . Barack's hiring too many friends now , he has to back away from that , I'm not sure who is advising him on this .
Cass's masquerade of parading around as some type of hard to understand intellectual heavy weight does not sell with me , I've lifted the veil and see a scared little boy that does not want to grow up and his grand scheme of wrapping his financial capitalistic ambitions in a thinly layered wall of pseudo intellectualism has been exposed .
Barack , your still my man , call Tim Berners Lee , the internet has become a sacred institution , do not let Cass Sunstein tinker with it , it will be the biggest political mistake of your career . The internet was created for the free exchange of information , unregulated , the last frontier , you guys may have almighty Google on your side , I do not know but if Google winds up on the wrong side of a big move to regulate the internet , trust me Goliath will fall .
Get a think tank together of some of the internet pioneers , publicly discuss what it is Cass Sunstein is thinking , ask him to put the joints down for a minute (LOL) , toss some ideas around , do not let Cass go at this half cocked like he does in his books .

I agree with Bill. Mr. Obama and I probably could not agree on the day of the week, but Mr Bryan has seen the truth and called him on it. What can one expect from a person who refers to legal arguments as "mumbo-jumbo". It is because of his animal rights stance? Something most blacks know nothing about or do nothing about? I guess Mr. Bryant's extent of animal rights is supporting Michael Vick. Truly, Mr. Bryant is a wind-bag and his column smells like the bayou at low tide.

Your article, and the comments here, are very much in line with Cass Sunstein's current book Going to Extremes: How Like Minds Unite and Divide. When like-minded people get together, their positions get more polarized. Sometimes that's good. Sometimes not so good. It depends on the topic, the extent to which information and facts are considered, and whether the like-minded group becomes more isolated and extreme [think terrorists] or takes energy from the group, considers other equally extreme groups who disagree, and fosters action that has a good purpose [think accommodations for the blind or deaf]
On the surface, I don't see much difference between Sunstein writing a book every year and columnists writing dozens of columns every year. Some are better than others. I agree with some and disagree with others. Seems to be little benefit in blanket condemnation and name calling, however.
Let's try dialog: a conversation with more of center than sides seeking just and common action.
Sunstein graduated magna from Harvard Law, clerked for the Supreme Ct, and is no lightweight. He's popular because he teaches effectively and engages the minds of his students, not because he sits around smoking pot. Has it been too long since McCarthy for the public to be cautious of spurious assignations? Spend your own intellectual capacity, which I am sure is exceptional, on solving the many real problems of the world, rather than these veiled attacks.
Very good article, and I can tell you spent SOME time researching this Cass Sunstein, however you left out one simple element: He is an avowed socialist. What is going to become of us one day when the Liberals who call for Washington Federal control over EVERYTHING find one day they cannot power their precious Apple laptops, can't get a double frippe latte w/ cream for Starbucks CLOSED cause they couldn't afford to pay their workers, and their Doctors quit or went into private pay practice to stay out the Government run realm? Mr. Bryan should be applauded for exposing some of the Hypocrisy now being uncovered by the Obama Administration. BHO is not GWBush Light, he's much heavier and harmful to our constituion...but they both are of the "Beer" family.
