The Romeike family is facing deportation. The family fled to the United States from Germany in 2010 seeking political asylum. Homeschooling in German is illegal except in very extenuating circumstances. WND Education reported on March 20, 2013, that talk-show radio host Glenn Beck is donating $50,000 to help the Romeike fight their deportation battle.
The family is being represented by Mike Farris of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA.) Although Ewe and Hannelore Romeike and their family were awarded political asylum in 2010, just three months later the Obama administration changed their mind and started procedures to deport them.
The Romeikes have already faced stiff fines in Germany for homeschooling. They now live in Tennessee where Ewe Romeike teaches piano lessons to support his family. If the family is forced to return to Germany, the Romeikes may lose custody of their children if they continue to homeschool.
This case is more important than just one family wanting to homeschool. Glenn Beck gets it right when he says this is a threat to all American homeschoolers.The Romeike family feels that the German public schools teach subjects that go against their Evangelical Christian beliefs. They came to America seeking religious freedom. An Examiner article published earlier this week, U.S. Attorney General says homeschooling is not a fundamental right, highlights the reason this case is so important to all homeschoolers—no matter what their religion.
