Glee: 'We Need a Little Christmas' (VIDEO and lyrics)

Jerry Herman wrote this song for his Broadway musical, "Mame."

Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee wrote the book which was based on a 1955 Patrick Dennis novel called "Auntie Mame." Rosalind Russel starred in the 1956 play by Lawrence and Lee. Russell won a Golden Globe for the 1958 movie "Auntie Mame" that was made from that play.

The musical version starred Angela Lansbury on stage in 1966 (with Beatrice Arthur as her best friend). Lucille Ball would star in the 1974 film with Beatrice Arthur.

The story is about an eccentric aunt who becomes the temporary guardian of her brother's son. When the trustees of her brother's estate require that Patrick attend a boarding school that turns him into a snob and Mame comes back in time to re-direct his life, including breaking up with engagement to the wrong woman so that he can marry the right one.

In "A Very Glee Christmas," Mercedes sings this as New Directions goes to a class caroling, hoping to raise money for a charity only to get heckled.

Lyrics:

Haul out the holly
Put up the tree before my spirit falls again
Fill up the stocking
I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now

For we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute
Candles in the window
Carols at the spinet

Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute
It hasn't snowed a single flurry
But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry

So climb down the chimney
Turn on the brightest string of light I've ever seen
Slice up the fruitcake
It's time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen bough

For I've grown a little leaner
Grown a little colder
Grown a little sadder
Grown a little older

And I need a little angel
Sitting on my shoulder
Need a little Christmas now

For we need a little music
Need a little laughter
Need a little singing
Ringing through the rafter

And we need a little snappy
"Happy ever after"
Need a little Christmas now
