'Glee': 'Born This Way' episode gets PRISM Award nomination

On February 9, 2012, Entertainment Industries Council (EIC) announced the 16th Annual PRISM Award nominees.  ‘Glee’s’ ‘Born This Way’ Season 2 episode is nominated for a PRISM Award in the Comedy Series – Mental Health category.  The PRISM Awards are presented annually as a means of ‘celebrating the art of making a difference’.

For several Flint area Gleeks, the ‘Born This Way’ Lady Gaga tribute episode marks a personal favorite, as ‘Glee’ once again celebrates loving yourself just the way you are and accepting one another’s differences.  Long time ‘Glee’ fan Lynne Gregory of Flint offered this comment today, February 11th:

‘Glee’s ‘Born This Way’ song is a great anthem, of course made originally by Lady Gaga.  But, watching all the young kids on ‘Glee’ sing it and wear the shirts as banners to the world that they proudly accept the things they like the least about themselves is great.  It sends a message to kids and really, people of all ages everywhere to love ourselves in spite of our flaws – because we are all unique and beautiful people, exactly the way we were born.’

The PRISM Award nomination recognizes the both the brilliance and the benefits of this episode.  According to the PRISM Award website:

‘Established in 1997, the PRISM Awards honor productions that are not only powerfully entertaining, but realistically show substance abuse and addiction, as well as mental health issues.’

The nomination selection process is also described as follows:

‘PRISM Award submissions are put through a rigorous nomination review process, judged by members of the creative community and scientific experts for entertainment value, accessibility of the message, and scientific accuracy. The production in each category that best exemplifies these three objectives is presented with a PRISM trophy at the annual event, held in Hollywood.’

The 'Born This Way' episode was written by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and directed by Brad Falchuk.  Falchuk, Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Dante Di Loreto are the Executive Producers.

The issues the episode highlights include Emma (Jayma Mays) coming to terms with her OCD and accepting herself in spite of it, Santana's (Naya Rivera) reluctance to come out, and Karofsky's (Max Adler) apology to Kurt (Chris Colfer) for bullying him for being gay and Kurt's hestitation to return to McKinley from Dalton.
