Numerous media outlets are reporting on the death of Matt Bendik, boyfriend of actress Becca Tobin of the musical comedy “Glee.” Bendik, 35, was found dead in a Philadelphia hotel room by a maid on July 11. The nightclub owner’s death came just 2 days shy of the anniversary of “Glee” star Cory Monteith. “Glee” lost the actor to a combination of an overdose of drugs and alcohol use. Monteith’s body was also discovered in hotel room in Vancouver on July 13, 2013.
Sources say Tobin accompanied Matt to Philadelphia for a business trip. Reportedly, on the evening of July 10, the couple joined a few friends for a night out on the town before retiring to their room later that evening. A hotel maid found the body the next day and there are reports that Tobin’s whereabouts at the time were unknown.
Bendik began showing his business savvy at the early age of 14 when he started helping out with high school parties. Within a year, he purchased some DJ equipment, speakers and continued to organize parties for teenagers. By the time he reached his sophomore in high school, Bendik was bringing in tens of thousands just from throwing parties. He once recalled, “My parents looked at the stack of bills, there was over $10,000 dollars. Naturally, they immediately thought I was into something illegal. It took a few weeks to convince them there were zero drugs. No alcohol. Just kids coming to listen to music, dance and cut loose for a few hours.”
Also during this time, 15-year-old Bendik was approached by the famous Whisky a-Go-Go on The Sunset Strip to take over promoting their Monday night-all-ages show. At the suggestion of his mother, Bendik applied for the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration in upstate New York. Bendik owned several nightclubs, including the DBA, which is one of West Hollywood’s hottest night spots.
Although a cause of death has not been released, police found no reason to believe there is foul play involved nor have they seen any evidence of suicide.
