Glasgow leaving, questions remain

In a move that surprised no one, Texas Tech announced that Chad Glasgow was leaving the Red Raider coaching staff. Last week, CBS reporter Bruce Feldman reported that Glasgow had been fired by Texas Tech.  Today, Texas Tech denied that Glasgow had been fired. They insisted that he was leaving the staff as of December 29th and that it was by mutual agreement between Coach Glasgow and Texas Tech.

So was Coach Glasgow let go last week or did he leave by mutual agreement the way Texas Tech says it happened? Bruce Feldman says it happened last week. At this point, Bruce Feldman has a heck of a lot more credibility than Texas Tech, at this point. After all it was this same Texas Tech administration that told fans that Mike Leach had locked a player in an electrical closet. That, obviously, turned out to be false.

So what really happened over the course of the past week? No one is saying and it is unlikely that any Lubbock media outlets would dare invite Coach Glasgow for a live, on air interview. It would be nice to hear his side of the story. Not long after Texas Tech announced that Coach Glasgow was leaving, the local Lubbock media went into the familiar “it’s time to move on” mode. Fans were told that Chad Glasgow was not at Texas Tech any longer, it did not matter why, and everyone should just move on. In other words, the average Texas Tech fan needed to shut up and accept whatever the university offered in the way of explanation. So, fans were supposed to accept almost no explanation, in this case.

The problem is that many fans want an explanation. A large number of fans do not trust the administration the way they might have two years ago. They want to know what happened. They want to know what took so long. Texas Tech no longer gets a free ride from the fan base. The truth is that Texas Tech has so completely mismanaged everything surrounding the football program over the past two years, that fans want a lot more transparency than is being offered.

So, Texas Tech basically fires a coach, doesn’t want to talk about it, and wants the fans to just move on. Now, where have Texas Tech fans heard that before? That’s right; it is what they keep telling fans about Mike Leach. Maybe they could actually give the fans the actual facts and let them decide for themselves what to think about them. They probably will not do that though. They will just keep doing the same thing they have been doing for the past two years, since it has worked out so well for them.
