With the dreary and cold weather of January, the allure of warm, exotic locals is more than ever. But the panic of what to pack can be quite daunting. Especially when packing for warm weather destinations and you're currently in scarves and mittens. Here's my list of must-packs for a chic resort vacation:
On the flight: Always wear loose comfortable clothes while flying and dress in layers. You will be leaving cold weather climate and arriving in warm weather. Also, the plane can be varying degrees of hot and cold, so be sure to be able to strip down and pile it on. My flying go-to is a pair of basic leggings, a flowy tee, a cardigan wrap or structured blazer and sandals. Oh, and I always pack a pair of wool socks so you won't have cold toes on the flight!
What to pack: Try to pack lots of modal blended fabrics and other synthetic blends since they don't wrinkle and will eliminate the need to steam or iron once you're there.
Obviously you will need some bathing suits for the trip. I am currently loving the mesh cut out one piece suits like this one by T by Alexander Wang and this one by Cynthia Rowley. If you must do a bikini, I am still in love with this fringe bikini by L Space.
Your beach coverups should transition well into city. You should be able to throw them over your suit and go straight to margaritas on the boardwalk, shopping in the city or even dinner. These maxi dress coverups are elegant and chic yet still lightweight and practical. I love this cream strapless maxi dress by Rachel Pally. Printed maxi coverups are fun and chic for running around post beach layout. I especially love these by Mara Hoffman and Matthew Williamson.
Accessories should be minimal since your golden tan and beach waves will be accessory enough. If you should wear jewelry, keep it to a minimum and try to go for ethnic and bohemian feels. These African quil earrings by Kristen Elspeth are simple and elegant. A stingray cuff like this one from CC SKYE is a nice homage to the wildlife around you. This statement necklace by Deepa Gurnani is strong and bohemian and adds a nice flair to a simple maxi or suit.
Aviators are flattering on pretty much everyone and I love the gold tone on these. If you want a more classic, retro look try these Jackie O-Inspired frames by Linda Farrow. A hat is always a good choice for hot weather destination. This striped floppy version is cute and versatile.
Pack a chambray shirt for layering over a maxi coverup (either buttons open or tied at the ribcage) on brisk evenings.
Depending on the type of trip you're planning you may want to pack one or two party outfits (or five). Pick dresses that are flowy and flirty and in bright tones. Your tan will make the colors pop! This mint racer back dress by Nicholas has a sexy cut and is in a lightweight silk and this flirty, fuscia dress by DSQUARED2 is perfect for salsa dancing anywhere below the equator.
Keep your accessories bright and bold with this orange lucite clutch by CC SKYE and keep warm on cool tropical nights with a neon blazer.
Oh, and don't forget to pack a good read. French style guru Madame Genevieve Antoine Dariaux's A Guide to Elegance is the classic style bible for timeless chic.
