Sunday, May 2, 2010 marked the premiere of a new monthly dance party at La Rumba, but it wasn't an ordinary dance party. Disco ball, bell-bottoms, headbands and wigs intermingled with knee-pads and roller derby gear, as the upbeat club-goers on roller skates circled around La Rumba's beautiful wooden dance floor.
The party was hosted by The Blondes (DJs Kitchy Ami and Matt Black), who spinned a blissful mix of disco, glitzy new wave, '70s glam rock and the best in electroclash from Europe.
Roller disco parties gained popularity in the late 1970s and early 1980s, at the height of the disco craze, but the fad had mostly died down in the past few decades. Glamazon Roller Disco at La Rumba is an attempt to bring back the fun and carefree atmosphere of that era, while updating it to fit the contemporary club and dance scene in Denver.
Starting next month, Glamazon Roller Disco will feature a BBQ on the patio at La Rumba, so bring your skates and get ready for some good food, music, dancing and fun!
For more info: Glamazon Roller Disco takes place on the first Sunday of every month at La Rumba (99 W. 9th Ave, Denver, CO 80204).
