Giving up the perfect poach

             Poach eggs with crispy bacon

Babyboomers are now discovering that the breakfast foods of yesterday are quickly becoming a thing of the past. You can still get a delicious soft poached egg with crisp fried bacon, but when faced with the alternatives that sit on the breakfast menu, turkey sausage (a true oxymoron) oatmal with fresh fruit and egg white omelets it is a challenge to stay commited to past habits. No one wants to be responsible for not taking care of their cholesterol, and improving their health, right?

There are a number of healty alternative like purchasing 100% pure egg whites in a box, but watch out for the sodium, or those boxes of  premixed "beaten eggs" again laden with sodium to keep them tasting delicious. If eggs are considered one of the most perfect foods, like the banana and the avacado, why does in come in so many unnatural forms. Is it possible to just cut back? Are we so void of willpower that to simply say I will have a delicious poached egg with bacon once or twice a month is impossible?

Recently the search for the perfect egg white dish for breakfast uncoverd a list of dishes that appeared to cause more harm than good. The spinach egg white omelet with asiago cheese involved using a non-stick fry pan and cooking spray. Another recipe suggested poaching the egg whites in boiling water, but being careful not to leave them in to long lest they become rubbery.

It appears there really is no real answer to this delimma, you are either going to injest the chemicals in cooking spray and from nonstick pans or your going to run the risk of eating a rubbery white substance that will keep you healthy but taste like air. Let's face it egg whites do not have real flavor no matter how much hot sauce you put on them, and if you manage to squeeze out any flavor, it's really the salt and cayenne in the sauce, one of which is still not good for you.

Perhaps the solution is to step back, visit your doctor, assess your daily diet and unless you are restricted from eating eggs in any form, eat them in moderation. The suggestion was check with your doctor first, particularly if you have any maladies. Eggs, nature's most perfect food is really not so perfect, perhaps we need to consider the incredible edible banana.

Detra, you sure said it! I'd rather eat real eggs twice a month than some terrible artificial substitute or (yuck) egg whites frequently. As they say, "everything in moderation".
