Pets are beloved members of our families. We groom them, we feed and water them, we provide for their basic needs and cherish them. For many of us, they are our surrogate children and we treat them that way. They respond by giving us unconditional love and devotion.
While some pet parents go the extra mile by providing lavishly for their cats, others give what they can. As with children, it's only natural that we want to give them occasional treats or special attention, especially at Christmas.
We hang a stocking for our pets. When we had 4 cats and a dog, we hung 5 little stockings, one for each of them. Sadly, we will be down to only hanging one extra stocking this year, so we may spend a bit more on our one remaining furry friend than normal.
Big chains such as WalMart, Target or Kmart have wonderful stockings pre-made for cats and dogs. They hold a good assortment of toys and treats. You can also get individual items such as this at your local supermarket or pet store. The amount spent depends upon your budget.
It's a good idea to fill your own stocking, based upon your cat's preferences. Do they like catnip? Now may be the time to invest in a few new catnip toys to replace the old, chewed and clawed toys. Do they like morsels such as Pounce or Whiskas? It would be perfect to place a pouch or can in the stocking to dole out as the occasional treat. Is your cat highly active and playful? Maybe they would prefer an interactive toy such as a laser chaser or dangly toy, or perhaps they would enjoy a toy like the Cat 'N Mouse, Turbo Track, Turbo Mouse, Kitty Peek-a-Boo, Cheese Chase or other toy available at PetSmart or PETCO.
Some folks use Christmas as the time to get their cat the pet bed that they have been wanting to buy for some time, or even invest in a scratching post or cat perch. What better time to purchase in this sort of gift to a furry friend?
What you don't want to give your cat for Christmas is another pet. With all the hubbub and general ruckus of a holiday, it's too much for them to absorb. A new friend is best introduced quietly, when you have time to invest in your pet's comfort and reaction to a new arrival. In principle, it's a lovely idea, but in reality, it's really not a good choice. The best gift you can ever give your pet is attention, love, care and devotion: the gift of your time.
