Giving is Awesome

Photographers are notorious for giving back to their communities. Through volunteer organizations like "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" and "Operation Love: Reunited", professional photographers are given the opportunity to give the gift of portraiture to families in need. But these volunteer organizations are not for everyone, many of the free sessions are emotionally and physically draining in one way or another.

It is no surprise that there is yet another way to give back to the community at large. Giving is Awesome is a project designed to encourage photographers to give away portrait pacakges, weddings and more to people in need of their services. Their goal is to give away one million dollars worth of free photography in 2010 and have already reached an astonishing total of three hundred sixty five thousand dollars.

There are many talented photographers in the Denver area giving away time, talent and product out of their own pocket for the greater good.

Do you know someone who is in need? Someone who could benefit from a free session or even a free wedding? Not only does the winner receive a free package, but so does the person who nominates them!

"Given the economy and the level of stress that people are under to simply eat or be warm, it is something like this that I know will mean the world to so many families. I am always amazed at the awesomeness that is the internet, and how one simple act driven by the heart can trickle out and touch lives." -- Erin Vey, Co Founder

To find a photographer in your area and nominate someone, visit the site and click on "Regular Folk, Click Here". It will take you to a page that will give you a link to a map, where you can input a location and see all of the participating photographers and what they are offering.

This article is nice to have ideas of how to give back, but you seem to have missed a major "giving back opportunity" in Help Portrait. The event went down on Dec 12 and can be found on help-portrait.com

Thank you for your input Ryan, I was well aware of Help Portrait but due to the fact that it has passed and has gotten loads of press- I was trying to post something more current people could get involved in now.
