Regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, or lack thereof, the months of November and December are often a stressful time. There can be tremendous pressure to spend money even when the money is not available, purchase ideal gifts, spend time with family even when relationships are strained, and attend functions related to work that often involve alcohol and unhealthy food.
There are multiple ways to take care of yourself during this time. In past articles I have published lists of helpful hints for people, including encouraging people not to isolate, have realistic expectations, eat and drink in moderation, and get support.
In addition to these and many other helpful tips from others, there is a growing body of research supporting the idea that rest and exercise are two fundamental ways to cope with stress. Rest can be experienced on many levels, ranging from simply getting enough sleep at night to not overdoing it during the day, or practicing a daily meditation technique that gives you the experience of deep rest. Exercise pumps up endorphins, helps you stay in the present moment, and greatly improves your mood.
Of course, getting rest and exercise during this time is easier said than done. There is so much that has to get accomplished during the holiday season and towards the end of the year. That said, if everyone made it a priority to get enough rest and exercise regularly, the difference would be remarkable – for themselves and everyone else. Make it a goal, set aside the time, and find a way to do both that are easy and that you enjoy. Give yourself the simple and yet crucial gifts of exercise and rest this holiday season – it’s a gift that will keep giving returns far into the New Year.
