TV personality Giuliana Rancic is doing well after overcoming breast cancer two years ago, but says she has to be vigilant about her health to ensure she stays cancer-free.
"It's pretty much blood work every four months, and they test everything to make sure I'm OK," Rancic told CBS News Oct. 7. "So far, so good. It's just regular doctors' appointments to make sure everything is OK."
Rancic, 39, underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in 2011 after discovering she had cancerous growths in both her breasts. Ironically, the E! News anchor discovered the tumors by accident while undergoing a third round of in-vitro fertilization after several failed attempts at getting pregnant.
Upon learning of the cancer, she stopped IVF, got a double mastectomy, and underwent six weeks of radiation. Giuliana and her husband, Bill Rancic, welcomed a baby boy, Duke, in August 2012 via a surrogate.
Looking back, Rancic said she was lucky to have detected her breast cancer early since she didn't have a family history of cancer.
"I was very fortunate," she said. "Because I've gone public with the breast cancer, I hear a lot of stories and some are not as great as others. And I realize how fortunate I am to have just kind of gotten out of there OK because it is such a major surgery."
Rancic, who initially underwent a double lumpectomy, later decided to get a double mastectomy (like Angelina Jolie did earlier this year). She says a double mastectomy is a major health decision that requires a lot of thought and medical consultation.
"Listen, if you have breast cancer, it runs in your family, or you have the gene and maybe you are thinking of having the surgery, talk to your doctor," Rancic advised. "Maybe it actually might make sense for you. But there are a lot of scenarios where a mastectomy would not make sense, so you have to make sure you're going to a good doctor, getting a second opinion. It's not a glamorous surgery by any means."
Rancic credits her husband Bill for helping her through her harrowing cancer battle. "My husband was everything throughout the process — from getting diagnosed until today," she said. "I don't know how I would have done it without him. I really don't."
Giuliana has been married to reality TV star Bill Rancic, 42, since 2007. In November, Bill will run the 2013 New York City Marathon to raise funds for breast-cancer research. The Rancics hope to have another child via surrogate in the near future.
