Forbes magazine has released its annual list of the World’s Top Earning Models based on earning figures from June of 2009 to June of 2010. The list included no surprises, with proven and established models taking all of the top slots.
Ranking number one is 29-year-old Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, with earnings estimated at $25 million. In addition to starring in campaigns for such companies as True Religion jeans and Dolce & Gabbana, Bündchen heads a skin care line and a sandals brand.
Second on Forbes’s list is Victoria Secret model and Project Runway host Heidi Klum. The German-born model earned an estimated $16 million thanks to her runway work, reality show, and campaigns for such companies as McDonald’s.
36-year-oldKate Moss, who has been designing for Topshop in addition to her many modeling campaigns, ranked number three. Moss’s earnings are estimated at $9 million.
Rounding out the top ten are Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima, Natalia Vodianova, Alessandra Ambrosio, Daria Werbowy, Miranda Kerr, and Carolyn Murphy.
Industry insiders cite the recession and subsequent advertising decline as the reasons for the reliance on established models. According to Ivan Bart of ING Models, “Companies want to know that if they’re putting money behind a talent that she is recession-proof. We find that the experienced models continue to earn well.” Edward Razek, chief marketing officer for Limited Brands, adds “With the exception of the top twenty girls, there’s less work and less money.”
