A former aide to Sen. Michael Bennet and his predecessor, secretary of the interior and former U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, will replace state Sen. Abel Tapia, D-Pueblo.

Angela Giron was selected by a vacancy committee to fill the District 3 seat Tuesday evening.

Giron spent 27 years working for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Pueblo County, including as a senior executive.

Giron is also a candidate for the seat in the November election. She is opposed in the Democratic primary by a write-in candidate, Eric Taylor.

State senate district 3 encompasses the cities of Pueblo and Pueblo West and most of Pueblo County.

Tapia, who was in his second and last term in the state senate, resigned his seat early to take a job with the Colorado Lottery. A civil engineer and former chair of the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Tapia previously served in the state House of Representatives between 1999-2003.

He was president pro tempore, chair of the appropriations committee and a member of the Joint Budget Committee during his time in the Colorado senate.
