The Girls World Expo, co-sponsored by The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative will be held Saturday, January 5 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in NW, DC, from 11 am - 4 pm.
Fresh from a succesful run from coast to coast in 2012, this exciting opportunity is for girls between the ages of 11-18.
This is not an 'Exposition,' by the way. This is, in fact, an 'Explosion.'
'The mission of Girls World Expo is to create an empowering community of peers and leaders to embolden girls to start building a foundation of self-reliance, to seek out their own best futures and motivate them to take charge of their lives today.'
Girls can learn how to create a healthy body image and uncover fast facts about food and nutrition. Girls discover how to create safe and empowering communities, so they can stay safe in life and online.
Participants will enjoy local fashions and a New York-style runway fashion show. They will hear speakers and attend a keynote luncheon featuring a local celebrity. Girls can browse a marketplace that showcases local products, explore a girls’ inventor contest, and attend a college and career fair.
Girls World Expo Directors, Varinda Missett and AnnMarie Gabaldon explain,
'Our expo events were created to provide a place where girls are able to celebrate who they are and become informed about topics important to them in a safe and fun environment.
'And, because our daughters have told us that we are not necessarily 'in the know' about all things 'girl' we have chosen an All-Girls Board to help us make sure our titles and events are exactly what today’s girls want and need in their lives.'
The Girls World Expo on Saturday gives girls in Washington, DC an opportunity to meet female business and civic leaders in the community, hear about their paths to success, and sample a variety of workshops and seminars. Community service credits are also available.
The Expo includes an art show by students from Martha's Table and live musical events that allow students to interact with professional artists and musicians. Student Dancers from the Washington Dance Institute will also perform.
DC Teachers are encouraged to invite all eligible students who can benefit most from this opportunity. The DC Collaborative will be providing tickets FREE of charge to girls enrolled in DC public and charter schools.
Tickets are free for girls 11-18, but space is limited. Reserve and print tickets from their web site. To obtain a free ticket use the Promo Code: DCARTS.
