Girls Rock! Rhode Island gear swap Feb. 11

This Saturday, Feb. 11 from 11am-3pm, Girls Rock! Rhode Island is hosting a Gear Swap and Volunteer event at AS220 (115 Empire St., Providence). Established musicians, aspiring songwriters, or musical enthusiasts of all walks of life are welcome to come down to trade, buy or sell a variety of musical gear. This is a free event and guys and non-musicians are encouraged to attend as well.

Also being offered are several workshops conducted by knowledgeable local musicians. Workshops will focus largely on teaching the ins and outs of maintaining and using musical gear, including instruments, amps, and pedals. Hillary Jones, who will be leading several of these workshops and is director of Girls Rock! Rhode Island, says, “Gear is something that is really scary to a lot of people, especially women, because often when you go into gear-focused environments it's mostly guys. It can be kind of intimidating, especially when you're first starting out.” Ideally this event will provide a judgement-free educational space for women and men to learn about and experiment with the variety of gear available.

This event also offers interested parties an opportunity to meet the people behind the scenes at Girls Rock! Rhode Island, a local organization on a mission to, “help girls and women empower themselves through the development of musical skills in order to foster self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-efficacy,” according to their website. Not only is this event a good opportunity to trade some gear and learn about music, but it's a great way to get involved in Rhode Island's strong and supportive group of women musicians.
