And this year, Girls on the Run has teamed up with more than 17 local Kiwanis clubs to take a stand against bullying in the New Orleans community.

“We are thrilled to have teamed up with Kiwanis for our spring 5k this year, since their mission is so similar to ours,” said Girls on the Run 5k coordinator, Casey Fletcher, in a press release, “This will be our largest 5K to-date, and we could not be more excited for the community to come out and help us raise awareness about the issue of bullying.”

The 2014 Girls on the Run spring season began in February. The program, designed for third through eighth grade girls, is the largest to date in the New Orleans area. The program teaches life-skills such as handling bullies, dealing with body image and the media, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community - - - in addition to training for the 5k event.

This year's race is schedule for Saturday, May 10, beginning at 8 A.M.

The 5K is family-friendly, non-competitive, and open to all. Warm up with some pre-race Zumba, then the run or walk through City Park. After the race there will be post-race refreshments.
