Alexis Shapiro is a 12 year old girl that is fighting for her life. Fox News reported that she recently had a brain tumor remove, and now is in desperate need for a gastric bypass surgery. According to Fox News on Dec. 31, 2013, she will receive her operation because strangers donated a total of $73,000 to the cause.
The mother, Jennifer Shapiro wrote this on her go fund me page:
As many of you know Alexis was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor called a craniopharyngioma in 2011. It caused damage to the most important parts of her brain. She has no function of her hypothalamus, or pituitary gland. This has left her with several life threatening conditions. Most we control with replacement hormones and medication. However, the one thing we have not been able to control is something called hypothalamic obesity. it is a beast, and we have tried so hard to control it. But, it has been found that no amount of diet or exercise will stop this obesity. Alexis has gained about 140lbs in not even 2yrs. It has been heartbreaking for her and for us. She cannot do the things she used to love.
Without the gastric bypass surgery, Alexis will likely die. Her body thinks it is starving, and it causes her to eat way too much food. This is all the cause of a rare illness she developed after getting a brain tumor removed.
The mother claims that the military insurance refuses her weight loss surgery on the basis she is under 18 years old. Without surgery, she would die. The mother pleaded that every day is hard for the young girl. Walking, playing and basic activities are growing more and more difficult.
Fox News reported that she will be getting her surgery because the kindness of strangers raised $73,000 to save her life. Jennifer Shapiro, her mother, was so happy that others felt compelled to help her daughter.
