A 12-year-old girl was run over and dragged to her death after her very first date, and the culprit is one that no-one would expect. NBC New York reported on Feb. 24, 2014, that 53-year-old Richard Benton is in custody on suspicion of drunk driving after his SUV rolled over his young daughter and killed her.
The Pittsburgh man was in custody awaiting arraignment on Monday morning after the incident that happened Sunday evening in Stanton Heights.
Police say Benton was slurring his words and smelled of alcohol. He also refused a breath test following the accident that killed 12-year-old Shamera Harris. The SUV dragged Harris about 50 feet before stopping by hitting a tree. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Benton dropped off his daughter's date after the movie and that is when the horrible occurrence happened. Harris' mother and brother were also in the vehicle at the time.
“This is a situation where it was going to be her first date, and they were bringing her to the location to take pictures with a boy,” Pittsburgh police Sgt. Tom Huberin said.
Police have said that Benton thought the SUV was in park. It then began to roll and went right over young Harris who had gotten out to take some pictures.
“She got out and went behind the vehicle. That’s when it went out of gear and went over top of her,” Huberin said.
"He thought the vehicle was in park. In fact, it must have been out of gear and went over her, dragging her down the hill and then crashing into a yard,” Huberin said.
Harris' mother did see the whole situation happen and she attempted to give her daughter CPR and a paramedic worked on the young girl as well, but they were unable to revive her.
Benton's vehicle will be inspected by the police to determined whether or not the brakes had gone bad.
