'Girl Meets World’ stars reveal concerns over spinoff idea

The long-awaited premiere of “Girl Meets World” aired on the Disney Channel on Friday, but the show’s stars recently revealed that the decision to reprise their beloved “Boy Meets World” characters didn’t come easily.

In an interview posted on June 27 by People, Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel talked about their new Disney comedy and how they wanted to make sure the spinoff strayed true to the original coming of age series.

When showrunner Michael Jacobs first approached Fishel about starring in the show as an all-grown-up, married with child Topanga, Fishel says she had some concerns about her character’s daughter, Riley (played by Rowan Blanchard).

"I asked a few questions," Fishel told the celebrity magazine. "I said, 'Okay, so she's going to be a girl and how old is she going to be? What are her focuses like? Is the whole show going to be a love story or is it going to be something different? Is she going to have goals?' It's really important to me that if we're going to do a show like this now, with a female lead, that she's smart and has interests outside of boys and clothes."

When she learned that the character was going to be well rounded and “the perfect mix of Cory and Topanga, definitely more like Cory with the neuroses,' " Fishel says she became very excited.

Savage said they all were concerned with making sure the new show would be something they were all passionate about, and that it would do the original series justice. He also wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be considered a kiddie show because it’s airing on Disney Channel. (The original “Boy Meets World” series aired on ABC as part of the iconic TGIF lineup.)

“I think we've done a really nice job catering to all of our demographics and all of our audiences. And we definitely kept in mind how we got here,” Savage revealed.

In addition to Fishel and Savage, who reprised their “Boy Meets World” roles as Corey and Topanga Matthews, the reboot features Blanchard as Riley Matthews, August Maturo as Auggie Matthews, Sabrina Carpenter as Maya Hart, Corey Fogelmanis as Shamus Farkle and Peyton Meyer as Lucas Friar.

The hit “Boy Meets World” sitcom, which went off the air in 2000 after seven seasons on ABC, followed Corey and Topanga through middle school, high school, and college and up through their wedding day, while the new series will be centered around the characters as a married New York City couple with a tween daughter.

Fishel previously told Access Hollywood her favorite part of the new show was “just being back with a lot of our same crew, and some new cast but also some old cast. It’s just the most awesome experience you could ask for!”

“Girl Meets World” airs Fridays at 8:30 p.m. ET on The Disney Channel.
