'Girl Meets World' renewed for second season on Disney Channel

Riley Matthews will be taking on the world for at least another season. On August 6 TVLine confirmed the news that the popular sitcom "Girl Meets World" has been renewed for a full second season on Disney Channel. The highly anticipated series debuted earlier this summer and has been the highest rated sitcom among younger viewers and adults on the network. The series is a sequel to the popular show "Boy Meets World," where a young Cory Matthews was navigating through life in middle school.

The new series is pretty much the same show except it's from the point of view of Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga's (Danielle Fishel) daughter Riley (Rowan Blanchard). The show has aired just five episodes, but has a big enough fan base to guarantee a second season of twenty-two episodes. Production on the second season of the show will begin in November. Adam Bonnett, Executive Vice President of original programming for Disney Channel Worldwide, said that "the series swiftly became a favorite of kids and their parents" and that everyone is looking forward to "watching Riley Matthews and Maya Hart make the world their own" just like Cory and Topanga did.

The show has ranked as television's number one series in every category from two-year-olds to fourteen-year-olds. In an effort to bring in the older fan base from the first series, the first few episodes of the series have included favorite characters from the original series. Many of the original cast expressed interest in returning for the new show, and Mr. Feeny (William Daniels) was the surprise guest for the pilot episode. Cory's parents and his best friend Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) will also appear in an upcoming holiday episode.

On August 6 Entertainment Weekly revealed that the show is making even more connections to the original series. Stuart Minkus (Lee Norris), a classmate of Cory's, will also appear in an upcoming episode that is set to air August 15. The episode was teased earlier this year, and reveals that one of Riley's classmates is actually his son, Farkle Minkus. One character that is not expected to return is Eric Matthews (Will Friedle), although he has said he would go to tapings of the show.

Other returning cast members include Sabrina Carpenter (Maya), Corey Fogelmanis (Farkle), Peyton Meyer (Lucas) and August Maturo (Auggie Matthews). The second season will follows Riley's school year while dealing with boys, drama, parents and after school activities. The show is set in New York City, which will become more important to the plot as the series evolves. The second season is expected to air on Disney Channel in early 2015.
