In an ironic twist of fate, 9-year-old Isabel Grace Franks of Sandy, OR was killed Friday when a sand hole she had dug with a group of other kids, including her siblings, collapsed on her at a beach located behind the Seagull Beach Front Motel in the coastal town of Lincoln.
Eyewitnesses said they had seen the kids digging in the sand, and that Isabel had sat down in the hole to see how deep it was when the sides caved in.
"At first we thought, you know, it was just kids, but it was like screaming and screaming and screaming," stated onlooker Tracey Dudley, who called 911.during an interview by KATU-TV "It was heart wrenching, You could see that people were trying and, I don't even know what to say. It was awful."
According to police Lt. Jerry Palmer, rescue personnel from both his department as well as firefighters from the North Lincoln Fire and Rescue Company responded to a 911 call around 5 pm Friday, and found a group of people trying to dig her out. The girl was unconscious and not breathing when they finally extracted her. CPR was performed and she was rushed to a local hospital, but it was too late.
Although North Lincoln Fire spokesman Jim Kusz said “this type of incident has happened before, but it's rare.”
Officials have since filled in the hole, and a makeshift shrine, including flowers and candles have been placed on the scene
