A girl found locked in a cage inside a mobile home in New Mexico had allegedly been placed there while the rest of the family went to the movies. The eight-year-old girl was born with developmental disabilities, according to a Jan. 29, 2013 report by FOX News.
The mother of the girl found locked in a cage is 33-year-old Cindy Patriarchias. She and her boyfriend, 37-year-old Edmond Gonzales, were arrested on Friday after officers discovered Patriarchias's disabled daughter in the crib-sized wooden cage. They were scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Gonzales is not the girl's father, but was reportedly trying to adopt the child. While Patriarchias was charged with negligently causing child abuse, her boyfriend was charged with permitting child abuse. The couple has not yet entered a plea in the case, and they were still in custody on the Tuesday following their arrest.
Surprisingly, this is not the first time that something like this happened. In November 2012, an 18-month-old girl was found covered in feces inside a locked dog cage inside a residence. Her older four-year-old brother was naked in the yard in 40-degree weather. A three-year-old child apparently fared better; she was sleeping naked in the same bed where her father lay unconscious "in an alcohol- or narcotics-induced stupor." The children's mother was reportedly at work at the time of the incident.
