A girl found in a dumpster in Smithville, Ohio on Saturday has left a "family friend" the sole suspect in her murder. Jerrod Metsker, 24, is being held without bond on charges that he killed 9-year-old Reann Murphy. ABC News reported Dec. 15 that the girl was discovered in a trash bin near her home.
The girl found in a dumpster was last seen playing Saturday night outdoors near her home in a trailer park. Her body was found by police about five hours after she was reported missing, the report said. Metsker was a family friend and neighbor of the girl. He lived directly across from her home. The 24-year-old was arrested Sunday after Reann's body was discovered 12 hours earlier in the trash bin by authorities.
A judge has ordered the man accused in the 9-year-old's murder to be held without bond until a preliminary hearing is held Dec. 23. The suspect appeared on video for an arraignment Monday in Wooster, which is southwest of Akron.
A lot of disturbing crimes against children make the news quite frequently. This latest one about a girl found in dumpster is a heartbreaking one that makes one ponder deeply how someone can fathom harming a child in the first place. What's just as bad, is when the suspects in such a case end up being friends, acquaintances, or neighbors.
