Girl, brain dead after routine tonsil surgery, to be taken off life support

A girl declared brain dead after she suffered complications following a routine tonsillectomy, will be taken off of life support on Tuesday, according to KTVU news.

Jahi McMath, a 13-year-old eighth-grade student in Oakland, CA went into cardiac arrest while recovering from having a routine surgery to have her tonsils removed at Children's Hospital Oakland. She was declared brain dead and placed on life support.

On Monday, the head of the hospital’s pediatrics department said that because she had been declared dead under state law, McMath would be pulled from life support.

Omari Sealey, 27, McMath’s uncle tells KTVU, “We didn't want her to be removed from life support but the decision is out of our hands because it's been declared a legal death."

On December 9, McMath went to have her tonsils removed to fix her sleep apnea. She had trouble breathing and suffered “an enormous amount of bleeding” after the surgery.

Dr. David Durand, the chief of Children's pediatric department, said in a statement that the hospital is “reviewing her case very closely.”

The Mayo Clinic says a tonsillectomy was once a common procedure to treat infection and inflammation of the tonsils. Today, a tonsillectomy is usually performed for sleep-disordered breathing but may still be a treatment when tonsillitis occurs frequently or doesn't respond to other treatments.
