Girl, 7, in stable condition after mom stabs her, then commits suicide

On Mar. 1, 2013, a New York girl was in stable condition after being stabbed by her own mother—who then committed suicide.

According to CBS News, Ava Sangavaram, 7, sustained a number of stab wounds from her mother Dr. Victoria Vovchik, 45, a podiatrist.

The girl’s father, Dr. Kristappa Sangavaram, discovered his wife and daughter in the family’s upscale New City, NY home after he received a call from Ava’s schools saying she was absent.

According to Iohud.com, Ava is in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center. Family attorney, Barry Cocoziello, told the website that one stab wound “missed her heart by a millimeter.”

He added, “It’s a miracle, it really is.”

Police confirmed that not long before she attacked her daughter and killed herself, Victoria made a number of phone calls and text messages indicated she wanted to hurt herself. But it is unclear whether she threatened to hurt Ava.
