Get this: A girl, 17, who only eats McNuggets, went to a hospital after collapsing. Stacey Irvine has eaten the McDonald's fast food treat since she was a two-year-old toddler. Doctors say the eating disorder is among the worst cases of addiction ever seen.
Details of the 17-Year-Old Girl in Hospital Hooked on Chicken McNuggets
Citing a story from The SUN, ever since the UK teenager (shown here) was a two-year-old girl, she has been hooked on the deep-fried delicacy, along with its side of chips. In fact, for the last 15 years, she rarely ate anything else outside of her food choice.
However, she collapsed recently and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital. There, doctors diagnosed her with an extreme case of anemia, nutritional deprivation, and a menagerie of other health problems.
Thankfully, she received the proper medical treatment in time to help address her growing nutritional deficiencies. After injecting her with an urgent course of vitamins, she received aggressive treatment, and was released to her mother. Now, she is recovering at her Castle Vale, Birmingham home.
"I am starting to realize this is really bad for me,’ she said. ‘My main meal is always chicken nuggets every day. McDonald’s chicken nuggets are my favorite. I share 20 with my boyfriend with chips." ~ Stacey Irvine, the 17-year-old girl hospitalized for a McNuggets addiction (British to English translation)
In Hospital for only eating McNuggets: Girl, 17, Has Eating Disorder
The question is why does a teenager become addicted to fast food at the expense of their health? As the girl is still a minor, one would think her parents take an active role in making sure she receives proper nutrition.
But even her mother is baffled as to why the 17-year-old girl, hospitalized for only eating McNuggets, is addicted to the fast food.
In fact, she tried using an unorthodox strategy by withholding food from Stacey Irvine. Apparently that course of action failed.
"She should view her health scare as a warning – a wake-up call that she needs to drastically change her diet. Fruit and vegetables are integral to long-term health. Without them, you greatly increase the chances of developing chronic conditions such as heart disease and cancer." ~ Statement from Nutritionist Dr Carina Norris
According to some experts, McDonald's Chicken McNuggets offer a tiny amount of nutrition in the form of protein and vitamins C. However, a person who only eats a monogamous meal that is high in saturated fat, sodium, and Trans fats is robbing their body of the micronutrients necessary for optimal health.
In short, eating disorders are real and can have deleterious effects. Often times, it is a symptom of something larger. That's why it takes a village to raise a family.
Hillsborough County Public Schools is spearheading efforts to promote healthy eating. Thanks to the Florida legislature, The Healthy School Meals Act of 2010 (H.R. 4870) will provide incentives to schools around Tampa to offer plant-based meals for the student body. And of course this means, no chicken nuggets are on the menu.
While Stacy Irvine's story (the girl, 17, who eats only McNuggets and went to a hospital after collapsing), is an extreme case of fast food addiction, it underscores the importance of parents being involved in what their children put in their bodies.
