Mundelein, Illinois Mayor Steve Lentz is requesting prayer for the family and community touched by the terrible murder of one 11-year-old girl by her half sister, aged 14, according to CNN on Jan. 23.
This incident is a heartbreaking tragedy that defies understanding. I'm asking the Chicagoland area, please pray for us. Pray, first of all, for the family that has been devastated by this," Lentz said.
The murder, which occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, was first brought to police attention when the 14-year-old phoned in a report that a Hispanic man had intruded into the home, stabbing her younger sister. Police soon learned through interviews with her at the scene that there was no intruder.
The older girl has confessed to stabbing her sister as much as 40 times after becoming angry with her the night before. The teen had been slapped by the younger and was still angry about that incident, and she was upset that the younger girl did not appreciate all she did for her when the two were left home alone by their mother.
Both girls lived alone with their mother in a residential community, with their home located on a cul-de-sac. The NY Daily News reported that police had been called to the home before for prior incidents, but not for a violent incident like this in the past.
The whereabouts of the girls' mother at the time of the crime has not been disclosed at this time. But regardless of where she was, or why she needed to ask the older girl to help her with the care of the younger, this mother is going to be dealing with some terrible and painful issues and loss for years to come. And she needs supportive prayers to do that.
Mundelein Mayor Lentz is asking for people to pray for this family, as now the mother and others within it will face one of the most horrible tragedies a family can endure: murder of a loved one by someone within their own family. For those who don't know how to pray, but want to, Atlanta's senior pastor and radio program minister Dr. Charles Stanley offers these tips on how we should pray.
And while Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman lost his young daughter Maria because of a family member (his son), it wasn't due to an intentional act, as in this case; it was due to an accident. But that tragedy in his family showed the world that you can lose a child due to another child and survive. And this mother needs to know that. She needs to know that with hope she will make it through this terrible time.
Atlanta Top News Examiner Radell Smith has a degree in criminal justice and behavioral forensics, but she is also no stranger to murder in her own family. Fortunately it was not by someone within the family, but, nevertheless, she understands something of the pain this family is going through and offers up her own Christian prayers on their behalf. She hopes that you will too.
