Thursday, April 10, 2014 action in the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship saw five matches in the second round, with two seeded players falling and the number two ranked doubles team advancing.
The spectators at River Oaks Country Club in Houston witnessed Spaniard Tommy Robredo, the number two seed, fall in straight sets to Santiago Giraldo by the score 6-3, 6-4.
The Columbian took the match in one hour, 19 minutes, using a combination of aces (5) and first service wins (69%) to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Number six seed Juan Monaco won the first set 7-6 (4) over Donald Young, but the American rallied in the second and third set 6-4, 6-3 to down the Argentinean and punch his ticket top the quarter-finals.
Fernando Verdasco eliminated American Steve Johnson 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, to punch advance to the quarterfinals where he will face Young.
Jack Sock took down Germany’s Benjamin Becker in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Number five seed Feliciano Lopez lost the first set to Alejandro Gonzalez 6-3, and was down 2-0 in the second when he retired from the match, to give Lopez the win.
In the final singles match of the day, number three seed Nicolas Almagro down Michael Russell in one hour eight minutes by the score of 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles action, Verdasco teamed up with fellow Spaniard David Marrero to eliminate the pair of Austin Krajicek and Michael Venus 6-3, 6-1.
In additional doubles action, the Colombian team of Santiago Giraldo and Alejandro Gonzalez downed Benjamin Becker and Rameez Junaid 1-6, 7-6 (1), 11-9 while Australian’s Chris Guccione and Lleyton Hewitt beat India’s Purav Raja and DIvij Sharan 6-2, 6-4.
On Friday, April 11, 2014, the schedule has Donald Young facing off against number four seed Fernando Verdasco on center court at noon.
They will be followed by an all Columbia match when Alejandro Gonzalez will take the court against Santiago Gonzalez with the start time listed at no earlier than 2 p.m.
The 4 p.m. match will have the number one doubles seed of Bob and Mike Bryan playing Guccione and Hewitt.
The evening matches will commence at 6 p.m. with Dustin Brown facing Sam Querrey and number three Nicholas Almagro playing Jack Sock.
