Cirque du Soleil Vocalist Gina Salá Joins Tabla Drummer Daniel Paul

World music troubadour

Gina Salá & tabla drum virtuoso Daniel Paul

will be hosting an evening of kirtan chanting at

the TEMPLE OF PEACE

on Sunday, January 27th at 7pm,

and a six day

KIRTAN & DRUM IMMERSION

on Maui’s north shore starting Jan 30th.

Gina Salá, a vocalist, composer, teacher and kirtan chant leader has a repertoire spanning 23 languages, and a reputation as a musical healer among her devoted fans in the Pacific northwest. Born into an Acadian family of singers she began chanting at the age of 3 in a remote Canadian ashram and continued much later under her spiritual teacher Papa-ji in Lucknow, India. She has since gone from wandering with sadhus in the Himalaya’s to programs in Japan, Asia, the United Nations and on stage as lead singer for Cirque du Soleil. To this day she continues to teach and tour internationally, still picking up knowledge in India, but also more fans everywhere along the way!

Similarly, Maui resident and tabla drum virtuoso Daniel Paul has been a fixture on the international kirtan chanting circuit for decades. He has primarily accompanied grammy nominee Jai Uttal along with many of the top artists of the genre. As a young man Daniel’s nine years of musical study gave him the opportunity to assist several of India’s greatest classical maestros.(Ali Akbar Khan, Zakir Hussain & Swapan Chaudhuri), and he was later awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to further his studies throughout India. Returning to Maui he has since played in countless programs such as opening at the Waikiki Bandshell for both the Dalai Lama at the

“Hawaiian Kingdom’s 100 Year Overthrow Commemoration”,and for Bob Dylan accompanying Hawaii’s legendary Henry Kapono.

Gina Salá and Daniel Paul first met at, and are now featured fixtures on the main stage at Bhakti-fest, the center of the universe for chanting festivals. With Daniel’s new CD “Tabla Mantra” (featuring Gina and several Maui musicians), and a highly successful 20 city mainland tour just completed, their passionately authentic and yet innovative blend of kirtan chanting is rapidly gaining momentum. In addition to the program at the TEMPLE OF PEACE in Haiku they are also hosting

a KIRTAN & DRUM IMMERSION this Jan 30th to Feb 5th on the northshore. For further info see: www.tabladaniel.com
