Local songstress Gina Rose has a long list of accomplishments on her musical resume. She has performed on "Showtime at the Apollo", she has won a DMV Music Award for Best R&B Female, and she has opened for national recording artists such as Avant, Marsha Ambrosious, and Raheem DeVaughn.
Gina Rose is currently a finalist in the "B. Discovered - DC's Next Great Singer" talent search contest which is sponsored by lifestyle tycoon and entrepreneur B. Smith. Gina was among 21 area vocalists selected to perform in weekly competitions held at B. Smith's restaurant (Union Station - 50 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC.).
Gina, who is also a Classical Voice major at UDC, maintains a very busy schedule, but she took off a few minutes to talk with the Examiner about her promising career.
ST: How old were you when you became aware of your musical gifts?
GR: I started singing at 3 years old, and believe or not I realized I had a talent when I was in kindergarten. I remember I directed my kindergarten graduating class in singing the ABC's. I had always been involved with music groups and my youth choir when I was younger, but I really begin to focus on my solo career in 2001.
ST: I remember you've always been very active in the DMV (Independent Music) Movement.
GR: The DMV Movement has come a long way over the years. So many talented artists from our area have proven to the world that the DMV should not be overlooked in the music arena.
ST: Talk a little bit about the "B. Discovered" competition.
GR: It's an absolute honor to be a contestant in B. Smith's first ever singing competition! B. Smith is a remarkable business woman that has created a new platform for DMV artists like myself to share our talents. I appreciate all that she and her wonderful staff have done for us!
ST: What other projects do you have planned for 2011?
GR: In 2011 I am working on my next album. I don't have a release date as of yet, but I will be dropping the first single in the near future. I will be performing at many local venues and events this summer in support of my new album.
