"Filly Brown” actress Gina Rodriguez and “La Bamba” actor Lou Diamond Philips will be on hand Saturday, Mar. 2 at the screening of their film “Filly Brown” as part of the 35th Annual San Antonio CineFestival, the nation’s original and longest-running Latino film festival.
Held at the historic Guadalupe Theater in San Antonio, the eight-day festival winds down Saturday with “Filly Brown,” which also stars the last on-screen performance of the late Mexican singer Jenni Rivera.
Directed by Youssef Delara and Michael Olmos, “Filly Brown” is an “inspiring and gritty portrait of a young artist striving to find her voice and seize her dreams without compromise."
Rodriguez’s performance as the main character, Majo, earned raves at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Rodriguez was also named the “next big thing” and one of the “top 35 Latinos under 35,” by The Hollywood Reporter.
Tickets are $12 a person and include the Premio Mesquite Awards at 6:30 p.m., hosted by “Fame” actor/director Jesse Borrego, and the screening of “Have you Seen Marie?,” the festival’s best short film award winner by Ray Santisteban, as well as “Filly Brown,” with stars in attendance. A VIP room will also be held at 10:30 p.m. for an extra $15 a ticket.
CineFestival is curated by award-winning writer/director Jim Mendiola.
New this year, CineFestival introduced a four-part web series called “Wappo vs. The World,” created by San Antonio filmmaker Gustavo Stebner.
