UPDATE: The victim has been identified by police as being 51-year-old Elpidio Morales, Jr.
Gilroy police are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating a vehicle that may have been involved in a New Year’s Eve homicide.
Officials say multiple witnesses called 911 at about 9:30 p.m. Monday regarding a man who had been shot on Old Gilroy Street at Alexander Street. Officers arrived on scene and located the unnamed 51-year-old victim lying in the street. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a dark-colored sedan had been spotted fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed immediately following the shooting. Police say it is unknown if the vehicle or its occupants were involved with the homicide, but are hoping to identify both to determine if there was any involvement.
At this time, police do not have a motive for the shooting, which remains under investigation. Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Det. Michael Bolton at (408) 846-0350.
