It's a sad day for 'Gilligan's Island' fans. Russell Johnson, who was known as the beloved Professor Roy Hinkley has passed away. On Thurs. Jan. 16 Johnson's wife Constance confirmed to ABC news that her 89-year-old husband died of kidney failure.
"He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 am today. He was a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home," said Constance.
Dawn Wells, who starred as Mary Ann on the hit show, shared her thoughts on Facebook, "Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and ‘the rest.' I love him and shall miss him. My heart goes out to Connie and his daughter Kim. I love you."
The Northeastern Pennsylvania native and Airforce Veteran served in WWII before his acting career began. His acted in several TV roles in the 50's and 60's. Some of his notable appearances were on 'The Adventures of Superman,' 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' and 'The Twilight Zone.' Of course though, Johnson was most widely known for his role on Gilligan's Island, which began in 1964.
The TV star also appeared in several movies, including 'It Came from Outer Space' and 'This Island Earth.'
Aside from acting, Johnson published a book called, 'Here on Gilligan's Isle.'
His last place of residence was in Bainbridge Island in Kitsap County in western Washington, where he passed away.
To date, Tina Louise and Dawn Wells are the last surviving cast members.
