Gilberto Gil, widely known as the godfather of the Tropicália movement, is for sure one of the all-time greatest Brazilian musicians.
With over 50 albums, awards ranging from seven Grammys to the Polar Prize, and a strong social commitment in his lyrics, Gil was a natural choice to be Brazil’s Minister of Culture for five years (2003-08).
Gil makes his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut next Tuesday with a concert of the danceable, funky, folkloric rhythms from northeastern Brazil known as forró.
Forró is a type of country, party music from northeastern Brazil, fostered broadly by the late Luiz Gonzaga, aka, the “king of forró”.
