Lynchburg area runners will fill the grounds at Lynchburg College on Saturday, March 23, for the Sixth Annual Gifts for Gulu 5K Run/Walk and Children's Fun Runs.
The 5K race, timed by Riverside Runners, will begin at 8 a.m. on LC's Jack M. Toms '69 Track and the children's runs will follow, starting at 9:15 a.m.
The 5K is the first run in the 2013 Lynchburg Road Runners Race Series, which includes seven races over the spring and summer.
The other events include the Point of Honor 5K on April 6, Spring Into Spring 4 Miler on April 28, Juvenile Research Foundation 10K on May 27, Presbyterian Homes 5K on June 22, Percival's Island 5-Miler on July 20 and Lynchburg Half Marathon and 5K on Aug. 10.
The goal of this year's Gifts for Gulu is to raise funds toward the construction and furnishing of the Ger House for Trauma Counseling in Gulu, Uganda.
Last year's race raised money for public health hunger relief and water projects for the people of Gulu. Like many running events, the annual event helps others.
All of Saturday's events start and end on Lynchburg College's track. Portions of the Youth 1 Mile and the 5K will take place on the campus. The Youth 1/4 Mile will only be on the track.
Lynchburg runners are ready for this year's running season to begin. Many have been in training over the winter at Blackwater Creek Bikeway.
Lynchburg's biggest race of the year is the Virginia 10 Miler. The 40th annual event, which draws runners from around the world, is scheduled this year for Sept. 29.
