Gideon, Champion of Justice is one of two new Planeswalkers printed in Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert "Magic: The Gathering" expansion set "Gatecrash."
Gideon, Champion of Justice - 2WW
Planeswalker - Gideon (Mythic Rare)
+1 Loyalty: Put a loyalty counter on Gideon, Champion of Justice for each creature target opponent controls.
0: Until end of turn, Gideon, Champion of Justice becomes an indestructible Human Soldier creature with power and toughtness each equal to the number of loyalty counters on him. He's still a planeswalker. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to him this turn.
-15 Loyalty: Exile all other permanents.
Starting Loyalty of 4
Revealed today in an article by Aaron Forsythe on MagicTheGathering.com, there's absolutely no doubt that Gideon, Champion of Justice will see both competitive and casual play.
Gideon, Champion of Justice can rapidly grow in loyalty against creature heavy decks. Like its previous iteration Gideon Jura, Gideon, Champion of Justice can turn sideways to attack your opponent. This time though, he can be decisively larger (or smaller).
Gideon, Champion of Justice has an "ultimate" this time around, and it doesn't disappoint. You'll need him to get a loyalty of 16 in order for him to survive, which is no small feat.
Gidon, Champion of Justice might herald the return of "Super Friends," a strategy that employed numerous Planeswalkers, board sweepers, and card draw to soar ahead in card advantage at every turn.
You won't have any mana issues, nor will it take a heavy investment in shock lands to pull off a five color strategy. Farseek, Chromatic Lantern, and Gilded Lotus will accelerate your mana and allow you to play the best spells from every color. Why hello, Good-Stuff-Wins.deck.
With a whopping 16 Planeswalkers in Standard at the moment Gideon, Champion of Justice has plenty of allies to help keep him from dying.
Between a Tamiyo, the Moon Sage locking down your opponent's biggest threat and Jace, Architect of Thought slowing down an opponent's assault, your Gideon, Champion of Justice will live to fight another day.
There's two different Garruk to choose from: Garruk Relentless and Garruk Primal Hunter. Liliana of the Veil and Lilana of the Dark Realms can keep the total number of your opponent's creatures in check, and Vraska the Unseen isn't a stranger to destroying creatures or opposing Planeswalkers either. Sorin, Lord of Innistrad can create speed bumps for your opponent's attackers. It may go against the story, but Nichol Bolas can fly in to dominate the battlefield too.
You'll want to throw in several board sweepers such as Terminus and Supreme Verdict to keep your opponent's creatures in check. Sphinx's Revelation will refill your hand and life total.
How will you use Gideon, Champion of Justice?
